PLEASE, are these accurate? what do you disagree with, be specific please.

Im sorry if i seem really annoying or needy, but this is really stressful to me, i wonder if i am overshooting and will get in nowhere. add to this my parents think its either top 20 college/michigan(where my brother is) or going to community college and flipping burgers the rest of my life. thank you in advance for your help

Regarding UW-Madison. They have a freshman expectations chart on their undergrad admissions site that would give you a 70% chance of admission based on an ACT of 32 and gpa of 3.5 (they do not use weighted grades). You are competitive for UW, there are also enough top students in the Honors program you would not feel the school was too easy. Feel free to PM me, and look at the UW site (and other colleges) of CC. Remember to make a list of your priorities and research the schools to find the top fits for you. You will find threads comparing UW and Michigan on the UW site, some of this info may help in dealing with your parents. Good luck.

Apply as soon as you can, literally as soon as you can, to a few rolling admissions schools that you would be at least reasonably happy to attend. My son was accepted around Halloween at one such school. Having that acceptance was a great stress reducer in our household.

There are several rolling admissions schools on your list where you will almost certainly get in (Pitt, UIUC, Wisconsin, etc). Send your application there NOW (or ASAP).

I don't think anything on your list is completely out of reach.

Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland is excellent in the sciences, has non-binding EA, and may offer you some scholarship money. Your parents may not have heard of it, but a lot of really smart/talented kids go there, and it is small enough that you will not be just a number.

You live in Missouri? Are you a legal citizen of MO then? The obvious safety that is missing from your list is the Univ. of MO-Columbia. Safety for financial reasons and admissions as well. It is home to a large medical school that accepts many of its own students. My son has numerous friends with physician parents who are sending their own pre-med kids to MU in order to save money for medical school. Perhaps your parents should speak to some MDs and find out where their undergrad degrees are from, since they seem to think you will be flipping burgers if you don't attend a Very Well Known school for undergrad degree.

Just my opinion, but I think several of the schools on your list are definitely reaches. Make sure you go into this with safety schools you can afford, you like, and are sure you can get accepted at.

And do the rolling admissions program at those schools that still have it, for sure, to get a better idea of where you stand.

IMO, you are not overshooting and will get into most of these schools.
WUStL and Hopkins might be the most questionable. I'm not sure about
Michigan, or USC--but overall your list looks very reasonable. Just apply early. Don't worry--you will certainly have some excellent choices.

You probably have a chance at Miami Ohio. However, 3.5 will most likely keep you out of Honors.
In regard to above on Case Western, I am not sure about Merit scholarship for 3.5. CWRU is very famous for giving a lot of huge merit scholarships. However, the combo of GPA + ACT (or SAT) have to be somewhat higher. My D. applied and got President's there ($22,000). Despite the fact, that CWRU was her #1, she is going to Miami Ohio (#2).

thanks for the replies. Although i know i will get into mizzou, i really dont want to go there. First my parents think its horrible and i kind of want to get away from missouri (unless i get in to WashU)

anyone else?

Oh and can you provide a link to the UW admissions chart you mentioned? im worried my poor class rank will keep me out. (top 19-20%)

Well, I don't blame you for wanting to get out of MO, at least to see somewhere else. I sure did when I was your age.

However, I am very familiar with MU, UW-Madison (I have a degree from there), Michigan and U of Illinois (son was accepted at both of the latter), and I think there are more similarities than differences among those four institutions. Just in case your parents are expecting a completely different kind of experience.

But if you are dead set against it, and you don't need the financial safety, then don't bother. But you really need to do the rolling admissions then at the other big publics.

And yes, sorry to be a downer, but I think your class rank puts you in a bad spot for Wash U.

I think you have a nicely balanced list, with a range of selectivity. I think you will have several choices. Are you all set on the financial end - ie, family can pay the COA at all of your schools? Or you will qualify for financial aid (I don't know what citizenship you are)?

I strongly second or third the recommendations that you submit the apps to the rolling admit schools asap. That should get you some good results and allow you to relax.

Speaking of admissions charts - does your hs have Naviance or other data you can review on admissions results for various universities? Using that data would get you the closest to knowing what your own chances are.

I don't think top19-20 is "poor class rank." Maybe it seems like it on cc, or is for some of the uber-selectives, but you have a list nicely matched to your scores, GPA and rank, imo. The rank might be a disadvantage on some of the schools on your list, but you can counter that with great essays and recs; so do your best. You don't have to get into every school on your list; lots of great choices on it.

to tell you the truth, i dont think that paying the COA will be a big deal, except if i don't get money from lesser OOS state schools (pitt,UIUC) then my parents wont pay for it.

I think with 32 on ACT you will be an automatic admit to the honors college in U of MO-Columbia (one page application, no essay...) You should consider that as well if money is an issue...

sublimo - You've got good scores, an upward trend in grades, decent ECs, you're male, and your list looks good to me. Stop worrrying and start filling out those applications for EA and rolling admissions schools!

WUSTL goes back and forth about accepting local students. Their endowment has been greatly enriched by local grads which makes them inclined to accept a greater percentage from Missouri. However, the percentage varies year to year. If you do apply--show them the love.

I third the recommendation that you apply for rolling admission--but I owuld confine it to Michigan. I think you have a great shot there and you will have an acceptance in hand by mid-October. Get that app in ASAP.

What do your scattergrams say about USC? Do you need money? That's another school where showing them the love really counts.

In general, you have too any apps on the list. If you get into UMich by mid-Oct, what does that do to your list?

If it were my list, with your multi-cultural, bi-lingual background, with a UMich acceptance in hand, I would keep Emory, WusTL, UMiami, UMKC, USC and John Hopkins. I'd also add Tufts. I would cross off the rest and see where the dollars fell with the privates.

Cheers: thank you for the reply, its funny you mention UMKC 6 year med because i am definitly applying there. the only reason i didnt list it is because i would apply even if everyone said there was no chance, i really want to go there and it is my #1 choice, however im being realistic and i know it is very hard to get in.

USC and Mich are basically tied because i would be extremely happy at either. if i get into Michigan in october i would drop alot of schools. i would only apply to WashU, Emory, Jhu, Rochester, umkc and USC.

Get thee to your school's scattergrams, subbie. My gut is that UMich is more likely than USC but it depends on your school district. Some counties in Missouri have a bunch of USC apps, believe it or not.

Also, what was your SAT breakdown? It is important to have +1450 on CR and M. It is also very nice if a boy has +720 on CR--particularily a bi-lingual boy.

Your essays will count for a lot. Personally, I like the multi-cultural, jazz sax, guitar and arabic side of your app over the pre-med shadowing the doctor side. You might think about asking for CC parent edits of your essay.
