So, i was a pretty big partier at my home high school at MD. What is the party scene like at UNC, is there easy access to alcohol for the underage and how easy is it to find parties/ where do they happen at (fraternities)?

Is this really the burning question on your mind? If so, why take your hard-earned acceptance (assuming you were accepted) to come to UNC and simply party and drink your college years away? UNC isn't going to be as academically easy as your high school was, so good luck with all that underage drinking and partying. Come back after the end of your first semester, and tell us how you did-- that is, if you make it through the first semester. :)

Someone's jealous haha. But seriously, I got into UNC and have the same thoughts on my mind. I hear it's good and there are a number of frats, but I'm not sure

im pretty sure its a good scene for parties. i work at Harris Teeter which is where like every UNC student has gone at least once a week and friday & saturday nights we get like 7-10 kegs a night or more. especially when it is basketball or football. people will buy 3 kegs, 2 kegs... and we even get invited to the party and we only help them out to their car. so im pretty sure you'll be fine.

people like janieblue make me laugh.

Jealous?? That doesn't even make sense.

I just think if this is the primary question on your mind, why not just go to one of those colleges that's first on the list for partying, instead of UNC?

The funny thing is I'm pretty sure UNC is known for its parties. So sportd012 you won't be disappointed.

Wanting to have a social life that includes partying is not a crime. This person didn't say "I want to spend all my time partying, partying, partying." Being a partier doesn't mean you can't be academically productive, as well.

That being said, you shouldn't have any worries sportd.

ilovecapezios and others: Here are the top 20 party schools, as compiled by Princeton Review 2008: http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/rankings/rankingDetails.asp?categoryID=3&topicID=26

As you can see the Univ of Md, College Park, is #14, so the OP could have just stayed in his home state and partied away.

While I'm sure having "a social life that includes partying is not crime," last time I checked-- underage drinking was.

Even though college students everywhere party and drink, obviously, and some manage to even graduate with a respectable GPA-- I just think it's questionable (and kinda dumb) for an applicant who just got accepted (when plenty of others here didn't, or got deferred) to have the first question he posts to be about how often and how easy it will for him to commit his little crime (underage drinking), instead of asking about -- oh, I don't know-- the academics? The campus itself? Sports? Politics? Dorms? Diversity?

Also, here are the top 20 schools listed in terms of major frat/sorority party scenes 2008: http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/rankings/rankingDetails.asp?categoryID=3&topicID=34

Top 20, Lots of Hard Liquor: http://www.princetonreview.com/college/research/rankings/rankingDetails.asp?categoryID=3&topicID=30

So, the OP might more easily find what he's looking for at one of these schools. :)

I think the college experience is supposed to be about making decisions for yourself, away from guardians. If he wants to drink and carry about, then let him. He'll have a blast and hone his decision making skills for the better (by making bad decisions and feeling the consequences).

I did and I'm 30 reapplying to school and finding my past a hard thing to shake off. But I really wouldn't do it any other way if I had the option. The lessons learns and life-long friendships made during my "party days" effect me more than anything else in my life today (I met my wife at a kegger).

"While I'm sure having "a social life that includes partying is not crime," last time I checked-- underage drinking was. "

I won't argue that. But still, you don't know that this person hasn't already looked into academics, campus, sports, etc. Access to alcohol is the least of my concerns when it comes to college, but it's certainly not an uncommon thing among college students and I'm not judging anybody based upon their interest in it. It seems a little extreme to start directing them to the notorious party schools because of it. Surely the OP has other reasons to be interested in UNC. But anyway, I don't want to fight the OP's battles so that's all I'm going to say.

In college towns, underage drinking (at parties, not bars) has become like spitting on the sidewalk. I don't even think it's a misdemeanor anymore. A ticket for underage drinking is the only legal consequence.

avantgarden: My post providing links to the top 20 party schools was in response to ilovecapezios' post that "UNC is known for its parties." Well, obviously not that well known . . .

mikey: Trust me. Underage drinking is still illegal in NC. ;)

I live in NC and work in a bar, and Underage drinking is illegal but so is running a red light. Both of which will have consequences but not at the misdemeanor level. After you pay the ticket it's off your record in 12 months I think. It's decriminalized.

janie if you have a problem with underage drinking at colleges you need to wake up and smell the roses because the fact is it happens at 90% of colleges and for many, it's a way of life.

i'm not advocating underage drinking, but i acknowledge it's existence and respect anyone who choses to participate. i hope you realize the futility of your argument, because drinking exists in colleges whether you like it or not.

the OP asking about the prevalence of a party scene is as legit to him as (for example) someone else asking about the prevalence of a jewish community. It's what is important to them. It's all part of college. For us, it's all part of life.

Underage drinking isn't necessarily a bad thing. Lots of countries in Europe don't have limits.
janieblue, you don't have to dissect my words. I said that UNC has a party scene. That's it. I never mentioned top 20 or top anything. I'm not even looking for a party school.
And I drink (usually wine in small amounts) all the time. And guess what??? I got into UNC nevertheless. Perhaps you shouldn't go to college at all. Or anywhere outside of your house. You just might see a beer.

Partying is an extremely normal part of college life, I don't understand why everyone's getting their panties in a bunch about it. For the parents on here, keep in mind that when many of you went to college, the legal age was 18, so it wasn't even an issue.

Yes, there are often parties. Frat parties tend are open during fall and spring rush and there is lots of alcohol and dancing and people are extremely friendly, so it's a fun way to meet people. People have small get togethers involving alcohol in the dorms, but I'd advise you to be VERY careful with that. I do know people that have gotten kicked out of their dorms for such things.

There are house parties too but I think they're harder to find as a freshman.

I'd give a lecture about being careful when drinking but I'm sure you don't need to hear that from me...

The above post is good. Frat parties can be fun, and there are usually a lot of them. Lots of people pre-game in their dorms or have small little parties there. There are a lot of house parties too--the club sports teams have house parties all the time, and those can be fun. If you have an ID, there are tons of people who go to the bars too.

agreed. its kinda part of the college experience. the parties here are great but not crazy crazy. theres a lot of stuff to do if you dont want to party and also a lot to do if you do want to party. i wouldnt worry about the lack of party scene here at UNC.

Yeah the parties are there if you want them. If you don't, it's not a big deal.

Most (and I repeat, MOST) RAs that I know of are not going to bother you about drinking unless you are very loud and obnoxious about it. Cops tend to ignore you unless you appear unsafe (like stumbling all over the place by yourself) or if you get into a fight.
