i had posted this before but i did not get any proper answers...so here goes again.

my sat 1 score is good : 2290 (math+cr 1550)
im in the top 1% of my class academically
my recos and essays are very good
my Ecs are also very good.
the problem is my sat 2. these are my scores- math 2=780, math1=720 (i dont know how !!), chem=620 and literature=610(again...i am amazed !)

so do how important do u think sat 2 is ? my intended major is neither science/literature. do u think i still have a chance ? do u know anyone who was not an athlete to have gotten in with sat 2s like these ?

i'm really nervous. Any comments will be highly appreciated.

I feel you,OP! I personally don’t think it will hurt significantly…at least that’s what I hope and try to tell myself, because I’ve got disastrous SATii’s as well…To make matters worse,I intend to major in IR or other sociology majors, and I got a annoyingly crappy USH score totally unexpectedly!(my mock tests at home…timed…were never that low…)

Now my friends are all yelling at me to chill…saying SATii’s aren’t that important…but, yeah,as you understand,I’m still stressed out and helpless about it.Oh sweet Jesus,I am lost…

A 780 in Math II is excellent. Math I has a notoriously difficult curve, and there is no reason to take it if you are taking Math II; nevertheless, you have a good score over 700 which is fine.

Most schools will only look at your top 2. I don’t know what they do when they are both in the same subject and there are other scores available…if you can exercise score choice, I wouldn’t send the ones in the low 600s to most selective schools.

If you can use score choice, I would suggest that you either study for and retake Chem, or study for and take some other subject in which you are likely to do well that is NOT math. (But not Chinese if you are a native Chinese speaker, or Korean if you are Korean, or whatever. Everyone knows that’s bogus.) You can try taking some sample tests to determine what seems to be a good choice for you.

If you are a senior, then just forget about it. If you are a junior, then, yeah, it wouldn’t hurt to have a good non-math SAT II score if you are applying to the most selective schools, and it might be worth the investment of a reasonable amount of time.

When you are competing against a group of people who have strong scores in everything, and no compelling reason to choose you over them, it may make a difference if your scores are under a certain threshold.

My only advice would be to stop stressing. A 780 and a 720 are not “bad scores”. Should you have taken something other than math? Probably. Is this going to be the thing that gets you denied? Doubtful.

I don’t think they’ll count both math SAT2’s but a 620 in chem is fine. I had 2180 on SAT I’s, 650 bio M, and 780 Math II…guess where I am now. My dorm at Dartmouth :-). Recs are much more important. And of all the number scores you have to send, SAT 2’s probably count the least. As long as you have over 600 no worries.

You are worrying too much about the SAT II. Anything over 700 is fine, if your other stats and app. materials are strong. Applicants seem to think there is a magical formula–high scores are great, but they are not looking at scores alone. It is likely that a certain threshold is important—but, really, there is a lot more to it. As well, make sure you have several schools you really love when they are this competitive.

S, a '13, had 710, 700, & 680 II’s. Took w/o studying because realized at last minute need them - and quite a few other things. I attended a Dartmouth program at a school an hour from our home on a whim to make sure S was on track and because our hs knew nothing of applying to any school out of our state. (S couldn’t go because of a physics test.) S had just gotten scores and I asked rep about them. Rep’s response was, “those [scores] will do no disservice to your S’s application.”
