Daughter has a 3.4 gpa and a 1380 on SAT. what are her chances of being admitted to penn state university park?
any info would help.
What major?
Division of undergraduate studies
That’s not a major?
It’is considered liberal arts
@lowkeyveryhighkey It’s Penn State’s “undecided” college.
Her stats are probably about on par for DUS. If she wants to increase her chances further, she could apply for the summer session instead of the fall.
I agree. She’s borderline due to GPA (course rigor will play into it), so checking DUS is good, as well as summer session (as long as you’re ready for her to start then and not earn any summer money.) Summer session isn’t a remedial session, it’s a regular session with a mix of students who applied past the NOv 30 deadline, competitive majors who want a head start, and students who were a bit borderline for the Fall. All benefit tremendously since they take two requirements over the summer, get used to the campus, college rigor, and pace, so that when tends of thousands of students arrive in the Fall, they’re already hitting the ground running; they can also take only 4 classes in the Fall thanks to the summer session to keep the transition easier.
She needs to make sure her essay is at least decent, too. It doesn’t need to be the perfect masterpiece, because PennState doesn’t have time for double reading and further review, but it shouldn’t be absent (indicating laziness) or very bad (indicating inability to write at a college level. Make sure punctuation is respected, paragraphs are indented, and spelling is correct, at a minimum).
We did check off that she is interested in summer session. I am not in favor of it, that means she will be leaving earlier. But if that’s what she wants the we need to do whatever possible to make it happen.
Hoping she will get in without having to do summer session.
Thanks for the help.
GPA is a little low but the high SAT score makes up for it. I would say she’s in for DUS. Make sure to check summer option if it is one of her top choices
There is no place to enter new sat marks on the penn state application I emailed them 3 times but still no reply and today is the deadine, what should I do someone help me…did anyone find a place to enter new sat marks?
You enter your highest scores. You need to have your scores sent directly to them anyway.
@ckmyd234 The priority deadline is November 30, Not October 31. The SAT scores are sent directly to Penn State.
Is that her weighted GPA or Unweighted GPA?
my son is in similar situation. 1360 SAT w/ 3.6 GPA W. He also applied to DUS & is willing to attend summer session (although I would prefer otherwise so he can work at his summer job). I’m guessing your daughter’s chances are good since she falls at the high end of the 50% range for SAT & just below the low end of the 50% range for the GPA.
Same here. I would rather her stay home for the summer…
Got to tell you that summer season was the best decision for my daughter. It gave her the chance to get 6 credits off her freshman workload (only had to take 14 credits in fall), start out with a strong GPA, and develop a close knit network of friends before 40k kids come on campus. The summer LEAP program is something I’ll do for my other two kids as well, if they get in.
@Sophley My daughter felt the exact same about LEAP. Says it was the best thing she ever did. I’ve never heard of anyone who didn’t like it actually - although I’m sure there are some somewhere! My son went to Altoona this fall and they had JUST started a LEAP program there. He saw how much it helped his sister and he signed up. He was one of only 10 kids at LEAP (but 60 other students were there for a different summer program) and he got 6 credits out of the way and eased into the college transition. I’d do it again!
