Take him to tour Delaware on a rainy cold day and take him to Penn State on a sunny warm day and lots of people having fun. That what the guidance counselor told me when visiting colleges we weren’t thrilled about.
No, just curious. My nephew is a ChemE student at UD and likes it a lot. He’s not into sports, though.
We were at an accepted student event at Penn State a few days ago. While it is hard to get to, it seemed like a great school, especially for engineering.
No advice but I understand. We are opposite though. For us UD would be cheaper and closer, but he wants Penn State. He just accepted his offer yesterday. Penn State gave a much better presentation during the admitted student tour. Also, for him, his major would be in the math department at UD and Smeal at Penn State. I think his tipping point was when the dean at Smeal said they had 17,000 applicants for Smeal and expect a class of 800. It was a confidence boost. They also had a student on the panel from his intended major to answer questions. The math professor who spoke at UD couldn’t answer his questions about his major because she didn’t teach those classes. It didn’t instill confidence.
I know it’s really late now, but I just applied to PSU’s University Park campus. Their website says they don’t offer rolling admissions, but the application was accepted. Will my application even be considered for University Park?
It depends on your stats, which major you chose, and how many previously accepted students for that major have deposited by May 1. It’s possible that you may not receive a decision until after May 1.
Edit: I noticed that you mentioned Computer Science as a major on another thread. I’m pretty sure Computer Science at UP will fill up by May 1 and that you will be offered admission to a branch campus if that is the major you chose at Penn State.
My daughter is going to accept tonight. She is in the school of engineering University Park (CS intended major). We are OOS (Seattle). I went to UW-Madison (1990 BS in CS). Daughter did her own decision making on where to apply and major - I was a little surprised she picked CS, but not surprised it was in STEM.
Very excited for her. She got into UW-Seattle but not CS, so the decision came down to between PSU and San Diego State. It will be tougher road travel/distance wise for us parents, but I think it was the right choice.
My daughter was accepted for summer session and she is having difficulty finding students that were accepted in the summer to room with. Does anyone know if there is a Facebook page for summer students? Most kids on the page are Fall start. She can’t seem to find a specific one for summer students. Also, we are trying to find out if summer students also have to find a roommate for the fall. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
summer roommates do not transition to fall unless you request it. So yes, she would need to find a roommate or go in blind. Honestly, I’m not sure it matters either way. Lots of success stories going in blind as well as finding someone ahead of time - and lots of negative stories both ways as well.
My daughter went in blind for freshman summer but met someone during summer and they requested to live together for fall. Summer students are given a few weeks to meet people and then they can request a roommate for fall if they don’t already have one.
Since summer/leap students are housed in east during the summer is it a good chance that they will stay in east given that they requested it as their top choice?
Yes. If they requested East, they will most likey get East for fall. I noticed last year that if you got a renovated dorm for summer, you stayed in that renovated dorm for fall (if that was your choice). This is anecdotal from my daughters friends so not foolproof, but is what happened last year. My daughter requested a transfer to South which is where she ended up. (long story - she kind of wishes she’d stayed in East).
If you want East for the Fall, do you think you should put no preference for type of room? Whether it be double, triple, single or supplemental. I’d think it would increase your chances over just putting double, right?
I would still put double as it’s the most common type of room. But just put “location” as the top priority when they ask you if roommate or location is more important to you. Most Freshmen that put East, get East. Not all get renovated East although they are renovating more dorms all of the time.
Would someone mind speaking about the dorms in north? My son is leaning towards doing the BASH housing. He likes the suite style, my only concern is him meeting others. East doesn’t appeal to him at all. He doesn’t like a lot of chaos. North seems good on the surface. At least he’d have air conditioning and a relatively private bath.
My son lived in North 3 of the 4 years and it was nice. A bit smaller than the other complexes, not too far from any one part of campus, close to the Arboretum. Vastly preferred to East, and no matter what you hear, there are plenty of freshmen in North. Many of his friends used his room as a rest stop between classes rather than schlep back to East.
There’s a basketball court now, and also it is super close to the creamery plaza, nice for hanging out. I would recommend it for those who don’t like the chaos of East or South.
Thanks so much! That makes me feel so much better about his decision. I think it sounds perfect for him. Now I just hope he gets it. He put the suites and BASH as his first choice and renovated north as his second
This could backfire depending on the kid. Students strolling around at 9am with beer coolers at PSU turned my dd off. She just committed to UD, which was my preference, and I’m honestly shocked she chose it in the end.
