<p>I think that the moderators of the site made it that way so if some kind of debate or fight started, you couldn't go back and edit what you said earlier in the thread. That's why you can only edit a post before somebody else posts right after you...I guess to prevent the "she said!" "but wait, I did, but wait, I edited it, so I didn't" thing.</p>
<p>I'm not sure how often that would ACTUALLY happen, but I guess they figure it's better to be safe than sorry.</p>
