Ah, was your permit test hard? I'm still scared to take it.
Is it better to wait before or after you have taken driver's ed to take the test?

I read through the rule book that was available at the DMV in one afternoon and scored a perfect on the test. It's really not that hard, and most of the stuff is pretty common sense. The only time you can really get burned is if it asks something like "How many feet must you stop behind a school bus unloading students: 5, 10, 15, or 20 feet?" because the answers are so close.

I didn't get to sleep until 8 AM one day. I woke up at 12:00 PM, read the driver's manual for 40 minutes, took the permit test, and passed with 2 or 3 wrong. It's pretty damn easy.

Mine was so easy. I read through the book, and, amazingly, one of the instructors went over the "tricky questions" from the test in class (the driver's ed class was pretty amazing already, though, so I know we all would have passed even if he hadn't done that). Ridiculously easy stuff, such as, "When you approach a railroad crossing with the gates down, the signals flashing, and the bells ringing, what should you do? Drive around the gates, drive around the gates once the train has passed, or wait for the gates to go up, the signals to stop flashing, and the bells to stop ringing?"

Tied for highest score in the class.

OP, I'm obviously not familiar with the Virginia test, but I think you'll be just fine. : )

I slept through driver's ed and got 39/40 on the test. Take it after Driver's ed.

In NY, there was a 20 question written test, and I only got 2 wrong without studying.
A LOT of people got 100, so you're fine.

Just read the book and pay attention to stuff like how far in feet you must be away from other cars and related and youll be fine. Its common sense.

If you know nothing about driving, it is better to first take driver's ed, but seriously, the written permit test is super easy. You should have no problems.

Most of it is common sense. Read through the book, make sure you know your signs and sign colors, and look anything with numbers (feet from the curb while turning, behind a school bus, etc) over carefully and you'll be fine. I was afraid to take mine and I finished really really quickly with only one wrong- something about where to park off the road if there's no curb. I took Driver's Ed two years ago and slept through it, so that didn't affect my test at all- just reading through the book was enough.

I took my test only a few weeks ago, and there was an easily identifiable pattern to the answers (all true or false questions are true except for question about the shoulder, for all questions that offered "all of the above" as an answer, the correct answer was indeed "all of the above".) I am not sure if the permit test is the same in all states, but keep in mind that it is incredibly easy and all shall pass if using common sense.

Yeah it's really easy. Here, you HAVE to take driver's ed AFTER you get your permit, because we have so much driving time [like.. 20 hours I think with the instructor, which is a PAIN] and you have to already have a learner's permit to get it.
I didn't even read the manual and only missed one question, because my hand slipped, mouse moved, clicked the wrong one, UHH wrong. lol.

Go for your permit as soon as possible. It is REALLY easy. Just go over some of the specifics and then use common sense for the rest.

Lol I failed it, but only because I did not study the penalties of being caught doing something ( there were 7 questions just about them...) I also didnt study parking distances and space in between cars and yourself so I got those wrong too.... If you fail, so what? You go back the next day...colleges wont look at it lol

Went back the next day after reading the penalties in the car for 20 mins and scored a 100.

Get it as soon as possible, because I waited till 3-13-08 I had to wait until 9-13-08 to get my license even though i turn 16 on the 29th of august.

The DMV website usually has quizzes which is just what I did. I took them over and over again until I memorized all the answers and just took the test based on that.

I just got the driving book, this week, from my cousin. I hope to take it and learn how to drive this year. Our school, has sadly gotten rid of driver's ed, so I have to rely on relatives to teach me, which I don't think would be a problem.

@INVENIAMVIAM: Twenty hours with the instructor? Wow. That would be painful.

It's really easy. I didn't even read the book and I passed.

I think I did 20 hours with an instructor since it gave me a significant discount on my insurance.

lol this is ridiculous you have to do to pass the test is just take the practices quizzes. They questions are pretty much exactly the same
