Placement Exams

Hello.

I have a few questions about the placement exams and hopefully, you guys have answers.

Firstly, if I don’t plan to take advance Math classes in my first semester at Stony Brook, do I still have to the math placement exam? Same goes for foreign language.

Secondly, I did four years of language at my high school and I took two language regents exams. The first one was in 8th grade where I took 2 years of Spanish. The second regents was in Junior year.

Lastly, does Stony Brook give you a lot of freedom with what classes you want to choose as a Freshman? Like lets say I wanted to take classes like psychology, english, economics and a science. Would Stony Brook let me do that?

Thank you guys very much.

Thanks for the questions. One, technically not, but you’ll want to do it sooner rather than later, because you’ve probably at least just taken math this year, and if you want until next year, you’ll have forgotten more than you realize.

Two, there’s no question there, but the Regents exam doesn’t count for anything here.

Three, yes, more or less. There’s a gen-ed framework that you’ll need to follow, and all those things do fit into it; you’ll work with your advisor and the help of an Orientation Leader to find the schedule that’s best for you this fall.

Hope this helps!

Chris

@sbuadmissions Thanks for your response! Apologies for question #2, I completely forgot to put my questions there which was do I have to take the foreign language placements but you answered it anyways. Thanks again.
