Placement Exams

How do we know if we need to take placement exams. I notice that they are giving them right now but don't know if it is necessary for my son or not. Would it tell us on the acceptance page if we needed them?! Do all incoming freshman need to take this exam regardless of AP English/Language classes taken in senior year?

what placement exams? i didn't take any when i entered UCSD. your AP scores automatically dictate which level of a sequence you enter, and if you don't have those scores, they allow you to pick the appropriate class based on what you think you'd get.

ie, if you flunked AP chem you're not likely to pass out of chem 6a.

It should tell you somewhere in your status pages. There is a language, math, writing, and chemistry placement exam. I think.

you're exempt from taking the writing exam if you got a 3 or higher on an AP English exam.
you're exempt from taking the math placement exam if you passed AP Calc (i think if you got a 2 you're also exempt but i'm not too sure about this one) OR you got a 650 or higher on your Math 2 subject SAT.

it should tell you on your status page.
i also took a language placement exam but i ended up not taking a language class and i didn't take chemistry.

language and chemistry are taken online.

so the writing exam is not required? its the only exam that costs money,

i dont have AP credit

i think writing is required unless you have certain scores to be exempt from it.

yes the writing exam is required to get into a writing class which is mandatory for each college. you're only exempt form it if you got a 3 or higher on an AP english exam.

if you don't pass the writing exam you can enroll in some lower writing class and if you pass that THEN you can register for the regular writing class.

if i am taking AP Literature this year should I wait till july until i receive my AP score, and only if I fail the AP test should i register for the writing exam?

if registration is free (dunno if it is), why not just register and go only if you have to?

no writing exam is the only one not free. you need to pay $65

it depends. are there any dates to take the writing exam after you get your AP scores?

i know you can take it in september during welcome week but if you take it then and pass you might not be able to get into a writing class fall quarter.
but then again you can just try to take it a different quarter.

u can take it in September, it says that u are guaranteed a writing class no matter what.

ap scores are in july

i'm just going to take it in september. you can always take other classes for fall quarter first.

I got a 5 on BC Calc as a sophomore, so I took vector calculus + linear algebra as a junior... but do I still have to take those courses again?

Also, I read what aditami said... if I got a 4 on the AP Chem exam, does that matter for anything, or do I still need to take the test?

@ diectsm: why would you even think that you'd have to take those classes again? if you have proof of completion and a satisfactory grade, you're done. as for chemistry, look at my post from above: your AP scores automatically dictate what part of the sequence you place into. apchem 4 = chem 6a exempt. take chem 6ah or 6b to continue.
