Placement Tests

I have to take the online placement tests this week and was wondering how long each one usually takes. Also, what level of preparation is needed before going into each of the tests?

Were you asked to take placement tests? My D got into CLA and she is not taking any tests… is this mandatory?

Yes it is mandatory. You should have received an email to your personal and U of M account from orientation services. There you will find a checklist of what needs to be completed prior to freshman orientation. It is also where you chose your orientation date.

Great. Thanks

You shouldn’t be prepping for a placement test, esp. if these don’t allow you to waive the requirement but merely place you at the correct level. If you “prep” you risk too high a placement which could cause you to struggle and do poorly in the subject, and perhaps have to retake. Best to let them know exactly how proficient you are. The test is there for your benefit, not as something to “pass”.

Hi. My kid had to do math and chem for CSE. Math was about an hour. I believe you get one try and then discuss with advisors if you don’t like the result. Chem… if you don’t pass the first time they estimate about 15 hours of review modules. Took my kid about 10 hrs to get to the required 80 percent for the ordinary placement. I hope this helps.
