Placement Tests

How were they?

First of all, if you're an incoming freshman, you should be taking them soon. Second, to answer your question, they aren't too bad. I took the Chemistry test, and to me, it was easy. If you're going into ENG, then they require you to take a math placement test. The math test wasn't bad, but I didn't do good as I wanted. Oh well, I still got into Calculus. That's all I care about. :)

I am annoyed that I have to take the math placement test when I have already taken AP Calculus in high school.

I'm worried about chemistry. I didn't take AP Chem, and I don't really remember anything from honors chem soph yr. Do I have to take Spanish if i have 4 yrs but if I still want to continue learning it?

i just guessed on everything cause for some reason you HAVE to take them, even if you know you are gonna fail. you will end up in Chem 101 and thats fine because you don't want to go into chem 102/103 unprepared.

If you want to continue learning a language (in your case, Spanish) when you have already taken 4 yrs. or whatever, then yes, you do need to take it.

I had 4yrs. of Spanish, and that's fulfills my foreign language requirement. Because I'm not intending to study any more Spanish, I do not have to take the test.

thanks everyone! i'm curious to know...where are u guys living? I still don't know where i'm staying at. They didn't get back to me yet :(

i lived in garner last year and then this year im living in a fraternity house. dont hesitate to call up the morons at housing/dining, they f up a lot.

to my knowledge, unless you are in a living/learning community, you should not yet have been informed of where you are staying. and not even the living/learning community people know their specifics (room #, roommate, etc.) beyond what dorm they are in.

yea, i didnt' get my room assignment or roomates name until mid July which I'm certain is what we were told long before hand would be the date.

i called them...it seems you're supposed to get your room assignments this week (you won't get the roommate stuff till July)

It says on the university housing website that we should of received hall assignments in "Late May." That obviously didn't happen, but hopefully we will find out soon.

It says room and roommate assignments are mailed in "Late July."

See http://www.housing.uiuc.edu/options/dates.htm

From above: "I am annoyed that I have to take the math placement test when I have already taken AP Calculus in high school."

Not sure why you believe you need a math placement test since UIUC no longer has one. Placement is done pursuant to ACT or SAT math score except and a calculus AP score, if high enough, can be used to get credit for and skip claculus (one semester for AB and two for BC)

Unfortunately, not true. The ALEKS math placement test is required for Engineers. I took AP Calc, called U of I, and found that I still had to take this test. It was reasonable, but annoying.

but does the act math credit count for subjects that advanced (like calc and statistics)? i thought that this credit only counted for minor math courses, or else i would have taken another ap class instead of math?

I'm a bit confused, but if you're saying, can APs cover major courses, yes. You can get AP credit for pretty much any course which mostly gets you out of Gen Eds like Calculus, English, humanities, etc.

no...i'm asking if getting above a 28 on the math section of the act allows you to not take harder courses like calc or statistics.
