Assignment: Do people accomplish more when they are allowed to do things in their own way?

There needs to be rules in order for society to function efficiently and safely. People do not accomplish more when they are allowed to do things their own way because they do not have the fundamental guidelines that keep them on track and make sure they are doing what they are supposed to. Through the boys in Lord of the Flies by William Goldings and the anarchy after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005 it can be seen that when people are allowed to do things their own way less is accomplished and a greater number of people suffer.
In Lord of the Flies, written by William Golding in England during the cold war era, Golding shows that when people have the freedom to control themselves the only outcome is chaos. A group of boys are stranded on an Island when their plane crashes and there are no adults to guide and lead them. Initially the leader of the boys, Ralph, sets up a system of rules that everyone must follow; however, there is no system of enforcing the rules and the boys just end up doing whatever they want. The only thing the boys really need to do is find food to survive and make sure that they maintain a fire 24/7 so that any ship that passes by can see them. The boys cannot even accomplish these two simple tasks because there are not rules. In one case, a ship passes by the island but there is no fire, because no one takes the role to keep the fire going, and the boys are not rescued. By the end of the story, the boys even end up getting into a major fight and set the whole island on fire. During their stay on the island, 2 boys even die because there is not one to stop them from killing each other and being savages. The boys experience on the stranded island in Lord of the Flies shows that when people have no rules to govern them and they are allowed to live and work however they want there is only trouble and there is not productivity to help better the situation.
Another example would be the state of anarchy after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans in 2005. Due to large amount of damage that happened during this hurricane, government officials were not able to send people to help the people of New Orleans and there were not really any rules the people were held accountable for. The New Orleans citizens, generally civilized people, were forced to deal with situations on their own until other help could be provided. When the people were allowed to do things there own way they decided to break into peoples homes, shops, and destroy property to get what they wanted. Gunmen and gangs injured a lot of people and the police were forced to spend their efforts controlling gangs instead of rescuing people. The people did not try to rescue other people who were suffering or make the situation better, they instead went wild and committed crimes that they would normally be punished for. Thus, the city was in havoc because peoples acts were not controlled and people who truly needed help were not provided any. In fact, even when planes came in to provide the people food and other necessities, the people threw rocks and hurt the officials instead of thankfully receiving their aid to better the situation. Through the anarchy after Hurricane Katrina we can see that even civilized people turn wild when they are allowed to do things their own way and what needs to get done is not accomplished.
Both of these examples show that even in life and death situations when people are allowed to do things their own way the result is bad. In Lord of the Flies the boys only goals are to stay alive and get rescued as soon as possible but they are not able to accomplish those because there is no rule and order. In New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina people needed to rescue each other and remain safe until help could be provided and failed to do so. Overall, when people have to control themselves and there is no upper force regulating their behavior the results are adverse.
