Prompt: "Albert Einstein once said, 'Imagination is more important than knowledge.' You can have all the tools of knowledge in the world at your fingertips, but unless you also have a dream of something you might build, those tools will lie there uselessly." (Adapted from Barbara Lewis) Is imagination more important than knowledge?

All throughout school, students are constantly encouraged to use their imaginations and think "outside the box" but the reality is that as people grow up, this imagination is replaced by practicality and realism for most people. Society now primarily associates the term imagination with children and adults often distance themselves from it but the truth is that imagination is essential to all of us, regardless of age. It is undeniable that knowledge is important, but with a hint of imagination, this knowledge can take people far beyond their potential.

Imagination supplies us with the ambition to endeavor for the impossible and strive to reach our goals. The vision that everyone has of himself or herself drives people to surpass their expectations and gives them the hope needed in a bleak society that only emphasizes practicality and rationality. Fitzgerald's Gatsby has this exact imagination of him being the ideal man for Daisy and it motivates him to detangle himself from prior social status to a man of significant wealth and fame. Had he not imagined himself as the "Great Gatsby," he probably would not have achieved the successes that he did and rather stayed a poor boy longing to be someone else but not knowing who. Of course the methods that Gatsby goes through to turn his imagination to reality requires certain knowledge--such as knowing the right people and what to do--for society is a competitive place where knowledge is the basis for anything, but it is Gatsby's imagination that transcends those of all his peers and rise above others. It is easy to forget this sense of imagination and youthfulness that leads people to strive for the impossible. However, should this imagination be coupled with a vast amount of knowledge, the potentials are almost infinite.

It is, however, very important to note that imagination must always be grounded by a certain amount of rationality and knowledge. Imagination on its own cannot survive in today's society. Gatsby has the knowledge from the war and from his connections with Wolfsheim that allows him to be who he wants to be. Without knowledge or rationality, imagination is just a fool's dream that will most likely never be realized.

Evidently, imagination and knowledge are both equally important to be successful in modern society. If imagination is the fuel to people's dreams and ambitions, knowledge is the technical components, such as the engine or the steering wheel that allow people to move towards these goals.

Thank you SO MUCH!!! :-)
