Hello. I wrote an SAT essay but don’t have anyone to grade it. Would be really helpful to get some feedback and advice on this essay
Do people discover more by exploring the unfamiliar or by examining the familiar?
Humans constantly strive to uncover the mysterious and to expand their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. However, they are often hesitant to step out of their comfort zone and to explore the unfamiliar. In doing so, they severely limit their perception of the world and circumscribe their leaning. It is more effective to plunge into a pool of the unknown and the foreign, rather than to stay stranded within the boundaries of what is known.
To illustrate my point, in the novel "Fasting, Feasting" by Anita Desai, Arun is a young Indian boy who has little exposure to the outside world. All he knows and is familiar with are the narrow words on his textbooks and the desk behind which he toils away studying day and night. Arun had little character development and virtually no social skills. It is only when he goes to America to study that he learned to communicate and interact with others. In a foreign and unfamiliar place, he is forced to step out of his comfort zone, especially when he lives with an American family for the summer. He discovers his compassion, sense of identity and becomes a more complete person by the end of his experience abroad. If he had remained in his small, sheltered world, he would've missed out on many things in everyday life, failing to make the discoveries that provide joy and meaning to our days.
In addition, examining the familiar will not change the way we see things nor will it expand our horizons. We learn by being introduced to new concepts which can lead to remarkable discoveries and experiences. NASA is an organization dedicated to navigating the unknown world of outer space. Their missions have given us informations about other planters. Recently, water was discovered on Mars, sparking rumors about humans possibly living on another planet in the future. By discovering how truly vast the universe is, this gives us a chance to literally find our place in the world. The discoveries NASA has made has inspired tens of thousands of youth to continue their mission of exploring the unknown.
It is far more beneficial to examine the unknown rather than to continually contemplate what we already know. This gives us an opportunity to broaden our view of the world and change our way of thinking.
