Please help me clarify

Hello,

I was accepted for admission for the Summer B semester. I am almost positive I applied for fall but I’m not sure why it says this on the acceptance. If someone could help me figure out what’s up I’d really appreciate it!

Congrats to all those accepted.

To everyone rejected: You’ll find the place for you! Don’t let one school make you think any lesser of yourself!

First of all, it’s advantageous to start in Summer B. Second, you can switch to a Fall start if you contact them. yes, they may have just decided to do that, but it happens.

Thanks for your response! I appreciate it.

What makes starting in the Summer advantageous? I’ve heard that all UF students must engage in at least one summer experience but does this make it possible to graduate a semester early too?

Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

It’s a great introduction to UF and college coursework. UF courses are generally harder than what students have experiences in high school, or dual enrollment, or community college. It usually takes them a bit to adjust, and it’s easier to do that over the summer while focusing on one or two classes. It also gives them a chance to get used to dorm or off campus life, figure out where everything is and how it all works when the campus is less busy. Third, they have an opportunity to make friends and connections, which is easier to do in the summer because students are less busy/stressed. Of the people I know who started Summer B, they all speak highly of the experience. I know someone who was accepted for Fall who decided to start Summer B instead, and he’s very happy that he did.

Also, you need to take 9 total credits over the summer anyway (at some point), so it counts toward that too.

Thanks for all your help! Does this count towards graduating early at all or would I have to take more than 9 credits over summer?

A typical degree takes 120 credit hours. If you carried 15 hours for 8 semesters, you would have the necessary hours. However, taking 9 hours over the summer wouldn’t eliminate a later semester unless you took a heavier load during some semesters, or unless you had 6 AP hours under your belt that could be applied.

Although I do not know, it may give you a significant advantage regarding scoping out & securing choice housing for the Fall. Also, you may get to know profs. easier in the more relaxed summer term & secure an internship & recommendations.

Do I understand @oldandwise that if you have AP credits you don’t need the credits for summer?

@FoxWarrior AP credits don’t get you out of the 9 credit summer requirement. What could get the requirement waived, is working a summer internship or travel abroad.

Still, Summer B is a popular choice. Campus isn’t crowded, it’s mostly freshman, so it’s easier to make friends, and it’s only 6 weeks. When the fall starts, you will not feel lost, and having a few friends makes it much easier to adjust to your first fall semester at college and away from home.

One thing to keep in mind is only certain dorms are open in the summer. So you may have to move out of that dorm and into a different one for the fall (depending on what dorm you get). Not a huge deal, but you should be aware of that.

@Gator88NE Everyone is required to attend the summer classes? What if you have a job to pay for school but it is not an internship? Can you explain Summer B vs another option? Anything else a possible new freshman should know.

You have until you graduate to complete the summer requirement of 9 credit hours, which is the A (first 6 weeks), B (second 6 weeks) or C (all 12 weeks) terms. If you have a job over all 4 summers, you can take 3 credits online for 3 summers, which would fufill your requirement, or take the, at a state university close to you. You do not have to be on campus at UF to complete the summer requirement!

If accepted for Summer B, will taking an online course meet enrollment requirement?

@ccnole Freshmen and transfer students admitted for Summer B are required to live in campus housing for their first Summer B semester if they secure a housing contract for Fall/Spring. I believe they also have to take at least 6 credits, to be considered a full time student (6 credits for Summer A or B, or 12 credits for Summer C, Fall or Spring terms).

I’m sure they can answer most of these questions during Preview.

Thank you. I appreciate the information.

Thank you all for your help!

From what Housing has told us, there is no spliting of Housing for Summer B admits if want freshman year on campus. I think if you want to stay off campus those 6 weeks and move on campus in Fall, they will work with you if let them know. (one might do this if don’t like summer B choices or have friend/family connection easy sublet).

Otherwise, what you get for summer B housing is where you will stay for Fall and Spring. If admitted to Honors and want Hume, will go to Infinity for summer B and then move to Hume.
