Hello fellow humans, I’m really worried.
I have applied to UMass Amherst (my top choice) with a RD but can somebody please please chance me?
SAT : 1190 :((
GPA : 4.7 out of a whole ass 6
Also I moved to MA from another country and my 9th grade scores are not calculated in my gpa
( But apparently I’m eligible for in state tuition )
sophomore year: all A’s but in standard classes
AP’s : junior year : AP Physics and AP US history
I only took the physics exam and scored a sad 2
And all of of my basic other classes were honors
Senior year : AP Comp Sci, AP Stat , AP Psychology
I really really want to get into engineering field or comp sci. Ik both of them are hard but it’s literally been my dream.
I also applied to RIT, Purdue, Bentley, URI and UMass Lowell.
most of them are out of reach but I don’t really know what to do.
Also I have tuition problems, I can’t afford any out of state or any other good private colleges.
Plz chance me and also would it make a difference if I apply undecided over engineering? Like maybe I get in undecided and then tramsfer into engineering?
Also if someone can recommend other colleges for my reach woth deadlines beyond Jan 15 it would be really helpful.
I can’t sleep nor stop worrying about college.
//i have heard that umass amherst looks for higher stats from im state residents?! Is that true? Also, my school is highly competitive and actually many of them consider UMass Amherst as a safety! Idk if that is going to affect my chances?
I am not quite sure how to interpret your GPA. Can you tell us what your unweighted GPA is on a scale of A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0?
Your SAT should be fine for U.Mass Lowell, which is a good school. If you get in there you are in good shape, and can think of U.Mass Amherst as a sort of something extra to hope for.
I am pretty sure that 90% of the population does not think of U.Mass Amherst as a safety. Yes there are some students for which it is a safety, but don’t try to compare yourself with the strongest students that are out there. U.Mass Amherst is well aware that there are some strong in-state students who are applying to BU or MIT or Northeastern or any of a long list of highly ranked schools and also apply to U.Mass as a safety. They have a pretty good idea how many of these will end up at U.Mass (even if they don’t know exactly which ones) and accept extra students to make up for this.
Hey thanks for your reply.
Well my school has 3 levels - foundations, standard/accelerated and then honors/AP. The highest grade in honors/AP accounts to a 6.0, whereas the standard/accelerated has 5.0 as it’s highest.
I honestly don’t completely understand my school’s weighting system but apparently Umass also recalculates gpa on a similar criteria (with APs and honors at one point higher than standards)
And thank you for the insight on how umass measure students’ levels.
many students with high stats from my school apply there and almost all of them get in but don’t choose to go. My concern was just whether they expect a certain standard of high achieving students specifically from my school region. I can’t exactly explain but like, students who apply there have good stats and have kind of set a standard for our school(if that makes any sense ?!) And I was just worried since I don’t even come into the average middle category of my class.
What is your citizenship, and visa status, and clarify how you qualify for instate tuition?
Are there commutable community college options close by? IMO that should be your priority.
You have too many reaches, you have financial need, you are international, your stats are a challenge. Did you come form a non English speaking background? Are you a refugee? Do you have mitigating circumstances?
I’m on a h4 visa, a dependent on my father who has a h1b visa. I also have other papers (I- something ) which clarifies the fact that I will not be considered as an international student ( got this info from the college). Similarly, my in state eligibility was confirmed over a phone call with the university.
None of the good community colleges are located in the proximity and I don’t think I’m interested in enrolling to one either.
I 485 application for status adjustment?
The reality is with your stats, you may well be a CC starter with a transfer plan (The Commonwealth Commitment Program?), look at it as an opportunity to rewrite the GPA/test score issue. Do you have a GC?
I don’t have a GC but yes I’m in the process of acquiring one (not sooner though).
I find the CC option a good way to rewrite my score issue and also save money but I’m also scared about it since, first off - I don’t really know about any good CC colleges nearby ( even my counselor was meh about it) and secondly I’m afraid that I wouldn’t really be prepared for engineering.
Also I will be applying to Framingham State and Worcester State later - they are pretty far but I think I could get in?! Later in the year since they only have their deadlines on feb 15th & march 1st.
