Thanks for your response. In the abstract piece I lost control because I’m usually really afraid to do abstract work. When I’m forced to in class I end up enjoying it, so I decided to try it on my own. And I kind of let my mood guide me, but more let the paint work its magic and I just let it do what it wanted to do. Its one of my favorite pieces. What do you mean by taking it a little further? When I went to National Portfolio Day RISD told me that they liked my work, but they would like to see me take more risks. So, I started working on this fantasy piece related to neuroscience where its this guy and I’m showing inside of his head. His neurons have a girl trapped and she’s in this dancing position. But I felt like I made her two big so I stopped working on the painting. Also, I realize that I use either a lot of blue or black and white and even though I love doing black and white paintings when I do color I think about trying a different color scheme. Like adding more warm colors but I usually want my paintings to be calming so I usually don’t take that risk. I do work off of photographs. I don’t see how I can paint a person, especially in cool positions while they are in front of me. I have friends who are really flexible, but they are just willing to let me take pictures of them because I take a long time to do a painting. Like I understand doing a still life, which is what comfort in a glass is, but I find it more interesting painting people. Which paintings do you think look flat? I’ve been told that before, but I don’t know which ones. And I know what you mean on the proportions. I have the most issues with drawing small hands. I’m good at drawing hands when they are the focus, like I used to do a lot of drawings of my hands in different positions, but one a body I have issues with them. I know I’ve made other mistakes. Like I feel like the arm in reach for it is too small, but I’m working on it. I’ve done oil pastel drawings and some charcoal and pencil drawings, but they are from a few years ago.
