Post your portfolio!

@Wrencher 94

I don’t know too much about RISD, however I do think that since you are a transfer student they are probably looking for a more specialized portfolio. I’m not sure what you are trying to major in from looking at your work (for example I wouldn’t include too many photographs if I was aiming for an illustration related program and vice versa). I would say find your strong point and send your work to the RISD admissions officers prior to admission. They probably have some sort of portfolio review program for potential students. I’m sure there is probably someone who can tell you directly if you’re portfolio stacks up, and if they tell you its not good enough they can probably work with you to create a good portfolio.

My cousin got in with a scholarship out of high school, but he has never showed me any of his work lol.

@Shubhank

Seeing as you are still in highschool, I think you have a very good portfolio for most schools. I’m not too knowledgeable about the nuances of the fine arts major but I think you could add a little more variance to your portfolio in terms of mediums and subject matter. You seems to like painted portraits and photographs. I think if you maybe added some pencil drawings or digital art pieces it would make your portfolio that much more diverse (But that’s just the opinion of a photoshop dork :p).

If you want to do 2d animation you’d better hit those figure drawing classes once you get into college. A lot of people who do animation take the fine arts path and then veer towards animation. By starting in fine arts you can building the basic bricks to get into a great animation college like calarts or Ringling.

I am actually kind of old lol (20). I changed my major from political science last month, so now I’m looking to get into an art school as an entertainment design major. I’m hoping for Art Center College of design, but i’ll probably apply to SCAD, RISD, OTIS and a few other art schools as well. Some of my portfolio work can be found here: [portfolio by MBato on deviantART](<a href=“MBato - Student, Digital Artist | DeviantArt”>MBato - Student, Digital Artist | DeviantArt) I dont have any student work up because I still haven’t taken foundations. Some feed back would help a lot.

@Azuran

Your transfer portfolio comment is incorrect….

A first year transfer portfolio should reflect what I have done during my foundation year at my previous art school. Keep in mind I have not declared a major yet or taken enough class that would help me build a portfolio base on my potential major. With that being said, college freshman transfer portfolios should NOT be specific to a major. I’m guessing you don’t attending an AICAD art school with a foundation year? During Foundation year you’re are being very experimenting in all different types of mediums, thus a Freshman transfer portfolio is suppose to reflect and will reflect that more experimental quality of work. Many schools such as RISD in particular, would make students re-do some of there foundation year. All AICAD schools with good standing will required a Foundation transfer portfolio. I done a lot of research and talk to many admission councilors that’s what holds to be true…

I hope all the potential transfer foundation art students read my statement so they aren’t confused about transfer portfolio requirements.

-Kev

@Azuran

If you haven’t had any foundation classes then you better put down the Digital art stuff and take up a pencil and some pastel or some paint brushes; because your going to need a lot of more fine arts to prove you are not in need of taking a full year of foundations classes!!! You seem to stick to one medium, which isn’t good, in transfer portfolios you want to prove that you don’t need the fundamental anymore. Your landscape digital paintings should include the process behind the your work. Like the sketch before the actually Digital painting, I’m sure getting to those finish pieces took tons of work and time, let us see your process more, will for sure bring more value to your digital work.

Your portfolio needs lots of work, especial for the schools your apply for… RISD! Their acceptance rate drop around the 20 ranges!!! I would recommend you attend some pre-college classes, before you apply to schools with tough acceptance rate.

[DO NOT apply to SCAD! God they have such a bad reputation! They are not even accredited by AICAD. I have herd some bad rumors about that school, mainly that it is extremely hard to transfer credits because of their lack of appropriate accreditation. Do your research, and trend carefully.]

Please know your portfolio does hold a ton of potential, just step out side your comfort zone, and show some variety. Believe when I tell you that will make you do foundation class, no matter how old you are. Lol, there was 42 year taking foundation class along with us 18-19 year old freshman, there are no exemptions…

Good Luck!

@Wrencher94

I probably should have clarified myself. Although you asked specifically about RISD, I was referring to art schools in general and because you have done a foundation year, I assumed by now you had an intended major. By specialization I mean, for example, if someone was going for char animation at a place like Calarts, that someone would need to focus on figure drawing and poses instead of photography… that kind of thing.

You’re probably right about RISD, and I am not trying to lead you astray or anything with your portfolio. The only knowledge I have is from what my cousin told me he did to get in but I guess things have changed since he applied five years ago. Good luck with your admission and let us know how you do.

–

The schools I’m applying for unfortunately won’t allow me to put down the digital work completely I think. This is probably where me and you differ, the programs I am applying to are not focused on traditional art as the only means of admission, they are focused on entertainment design and conceptualization. And that’s not to denigrate fine arts at all, fine arts will improve my digital work! Here are two portfolio’s from random people who got accepted to ACCD:

(^^ p.s the work here belongs to Julia and Andrew Charlton respectively ^^)

I do obviously have a lot of work to do. I’m going to portfolio day in october in Chicago. Thanks for you advice about the environments, I’ll add in the line-work. I am looking forward to foundation art courses. If I get accepted anywhere I will probably start off as a freshman and take a year of foundation anyways.

Here is a link to my tumblr that I post a lot of my artwork on:

I sometimes post pictures multiple times.

Applying to Cooper Union, MICA and RISD, among other smaller schools.

Can anyone give me feedback?

Before I give you feedback.

How old are you? Art you a transfer-student or freshman. What do you want to major in? It will help to give your pieces some titles, so I can refer to them when I give feedback. You should also search the web for portfolio sites, so it can look more presentable.

I have a more professional website but I can only post so many pieces so I figured posting my tumblr would be nice to show greater quantity:

I am a junior in high school.
I am planning on entering the YoungArts competition this fall and my top choice is Cooper Union. I’m very interested in experimenting in more conceptual, interdisciplinary work.

Yeah I love your conceptual work, very sophisticated level of thinking for a junior year high school student. Good luck in YoungArts, I’m applying also, I graduate early from high school at the age of 17. So I’m still eligible because I don’t turn 19 into next year! Thank god, I have a whole year of college under my belt, so hopefully I win something.

Sorry about the separate thread. At the time, I didn’t realize that this thread was available. Please take a look at this portfolio of artwork produced in an AP Studio Art class Junior year. The last 4 images are of projects completed in programs offered to high schoolers at SAIC and SCAD.

Hi Jocelyn,
I am a college counselor for creative (visual arts) students. Where do you intend to apply?
Lorraine

Hi Naira,
I am a college counselor for creative (visual arts) students. Are you still looking for portfolio advisement?
Lorraine

Omg tkminogue8. I read your tumblr about the portfolio review at cooper union and being rejected from Youngarts. I got rejected from young arts too, but that’s so hard to get into and art is subjective so even if one person doesn’t like your art don’t let it define you. That guy from cooper union was really mean. I think your work is nice. Its definitely interesting. We are the same age. I have a portfolio but I don’t have a link to it. Uhh. I think I’m going to create a tumblr so I can post my portfolio

Ok. I just made a tumblr. Untitled Please give me your honest opinion. I don’t usually get much critique. I’m planning on double majoring in neuroscience and art, so I’m not applying to regular art schools. I’m applying to school like WashU and Brown and I am submitting my portfolio. Thanks guys

Hi TrueDreamer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my blog/portfolio! Your kind words mean a lot. Youngarts was definitely a tough rejection letter to open but I think you’re right; it’s just such a competitive and subjective field. But luckily, I went to Cooper Union this year again for a portfolio review and got a faculty referred early decision packet- which was a pleasant surprise! As for your portfolio, I think that you have some really solid pieces in there and a distinct style. I would recommend signing your pieces on the back, or a bit smaller so it doesn’t distract the viewer, but that’s just personal perference. I think your strongest pieces are “Reach for it” (definitely shows an understanding of the human figure), “Comfort in a Glass” (rendering fabric and glass, really difficult technical feats), and “Lose Control”. How did you make “Lose Control”? I admire the abstraction- it really is the most unique piece out of the paintings I’ve seen. Yet there is a feeling of realism to it; as though it is a reflection in tumultuous seas or something. I love it. You do a really good job with a limited palette but I’d love to see you take it a little further. Pay a lot of attention to the general form of a figure- sometimes your proportion is a bit off even though the individual details are well rendered. Are you painting from photographs? Some of the paintings appear somewhat flat. Do you work in any other media besides paint? I’d love to see more work.
