Pre med

Can you send please the tumblr link?

No, it’s forbidden by terms of service. You have to look in Tumblr and look for AFrenchie36.

Ok Thanks so much!! We will take a look.

  1. UPitt : during her freshman year get good grades she will have the chance to be in Honnors
  2. UW : Will apply hopefully with better SAT and try the Honnors as well
  3. CU Boulder: what do you think about it? She likes it a lot
  4. More universities with BS/MD or MD/PHD that accept internationals?

FWIW, the medical school and academic hospital for CU isn’t in Boulder–it’s in Aurora which is about 45+ minutes away through the mountains.

There is plenty of biological research available on campus, but clinical ECs are harder to come by. There are only 2 hospitals in Boulder–neither are academic centers.

Boulder has a population of under 100,000 and CU has a student enrollment >35,000.

And how about Penn State? We loved the Campus but our visit was during the Summer and there was any student there
and the location wasn’t that good!

BS/MD programs are highly, highly competitive. I would imagine that getting accepted as an international student would be even more competitive? My daughter was invited to apply to the program at Pitt
it asked about research completed in high school, among other things.

Is your daughter interested in MD/PHD programs? What are her thoughts on all of this? Is she interested in undergraduate research? That will be necessary for these programs. I don’t know which programs are open to internationals, and of course it could change by the time your daughter applies.

Penn State-University Park campus is rather isolated. The medical school is in Hershey-- 2 hours away.

Like CU- Boulder, Penn State offers plenty of opportunities for biological research, but clinical opportunities are limited.

State College has one small-ish community hospital. (State College is a small town with only 42,000 people; Penn State has twice as any full time students as people who live in the town.) The next nearest hospital is in Altoona–which is 45 minutes away–and it’s a pretty small hospital.

Yes
My D is interested in MD/PHD as well.

Here’s a current list of admission policies for all MD/ PhD programs–including which will consider international students for admission:

NOTE: just because a MD/PhD program accepts international students doesn’t mean it will fund their studies. MSTP funding is specifically prohibited from being offered to internationals. Your D will need to double check with all MSTP-funded programs to see if they have outside, non-federal funds to support international students.

Yes she is!

You don’t understand. It doesn’t matter that she may get into Pitt Honors Sophomore year. The point is that she didn’t make it now which means she isn’t one of their top applicants which means the competition for her at Pitt is likely to “weed her out” (especially since she’ll have the handicap of not having the Honors perks such as priority registration).
Email Pitt and see if she could get into Honors now. Did she forget to send them something but might still have a chance? Or is that closed off for freshman year?

UWisconsin: Honors at Wisconsin are different - you apply only after getting admitted.
CU Boulder is a good university, great environment, the Honors College is average though. Not sure about the Premed opportunities for their Honors students - email.

Email ASU Barrett and ask about opportunities for premeds in terms of research, EMT training, volunteering in clinics/hospitals, and any “special agreement” with the medical school (such as summer internship).

Same thing for USC Columbia.

Look into UHouston, Tulane, Penn State, Tufts, St Louis University? At UH and SLU she has a good shot at Honors. At Penn State Schreyer she MIGHT have, it’d really depend on her essays and recommendations as well as course rigor.

Penn state has a special program for 4 Schreyer freshmen (rising sophomores) for a fully paid summer in Hershey at the medical school. Email Schreyer about it and look at the other Honors Programs to see whether they offer something similar.

Also look at DO schools. This one has a guaranteed admission system. If you get in, you do 7 or 8 years till you have your Bachelors and Medical degree.

Oh now we understood!!! She had applied for rolling admission to Pitt with her initial SAT. She increased yet it, continued to study and took another Sat yesterday that hopefully will be better. You suggested that we have to e mail them asking if she could enter In the Honnors program right now and what are the requirements for it, if she can send something that will increase her chances. Ok My D Will do that tomorrow and we are going to search and contact the Universities that you sent.
Do you thing UW Madison will be a good option as well? Is her first option since she visited it. Loved the Campus felling and the people was so nice with her!

Pitt will mail your daughter an invitation to honors after the acceptance. I agree - if she didn’t get in automatically then she will be among some brilliant students and may very well be weeded out of the premed courses. Pitt is one of my favorite schools but academically it may not be the smartest move for your daughter.

I like the idea of DO schools.

How about UW Madison and the honors application after the admission?

UWisc Madison does things a bit differently, so we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it

Do you think UW is a good school where she could has pre med opportunities like research, volunteering and shadowing to built a strong medical application? She will mail them to know more about the honors college!!!

She may have these opportunities but it’ll depend on her. Most importantly her profile should be in the top 10% of students admitted. To give you an idea, at UWisconsin it means 700+ in EBR and 750+ in Math on the SAT and a high school GPA close to 4.0 (or what is “excellent/exceptional” in your country, like 15 in France, or A* in Great Britain).

I dont have first hand premed experience with UW
but I am sure that these opportunities exist
But as was mentioned- it will depend on her. She needs to go after these opportunities and get to know her professors etc.

My D studies in an American International school with the Full IB Diploma. Last Sat she had 700 Math and 640 eng, hopefully she will increase that score. Let’s wait until oct 20. She’s doing really well during senior IB Year, GPA around 4.0. At UW website they said that they have the biology honors and the requirements are bellow her’s, and they also has residential learning communities and tons of pre med clubs. They has hospitals on Campus that helps!

Again thank you very much for all the attention and helping with all these situation. We know that needs a lot of search, hard work and Follow the right path.
