What are some non-audition schools? She applied to Muhlenberg and is doing an audition there in February, although they state an audition is not required. We have Point Park, University of the Arts, Marymount Manhattan, NYU, and hopefully Fordham. But all these do require auditions. The schools that don’t require any, are they just as good? This is a learning process for us definitely.

caymangirl38 - Columbia College and University of Rhode Island are my son’s two non-audition schools. URI offers a BFA in Acting, Minor in Vocal Performance. My son has received his acceptance from Columbia College. He has been out of the house from 7AM to 8PM due to the school play and music commitments, so he has not sent in his pre-screens yet.

ylimecole - I’m very nervous about the pre-screens because it will be the first opportunity for my son to be rejected! He feels confident, and I’m keeping my feelings to myself (except for CC!).

Cayman girl- the audition at Muhlenberg is only to make a determination for merit aid. You do not need the audition to be accepted to the theatre major. You are correct that it is a “non-auditioned” program.

Hey guys, my friend recently visited and asked a bunch of questions. They told her that this year 300 are making it through prescreens. Hope this is actually true and I hope it helps! I was called back for a live audition like a month ago. Break legs, everyone!

caymangirl38,

I suggest you look at the thread Big List of College Programs by type under the main musical theatre page. It shows a ton of non audition schools, all different, some stronger than others, plenty as strong as some audition programs. One school in the same region as Muhlenberg with a similar Talent Scholarhip Audition is Desales University. I don’t know much about the program, but I do know of some successful grads working in the industry. Good luck to you!

entertainersmom- I understand that! I have already received my first rejection of the year and I will say that it was tough. But I reminded myself that I knew I would face rejections along with acceptances. Considering the fact that they give their acceptances the day of in front of everybody (the school I was auditioning at) I also know who was cut and accepted and there seemed to be a specific type that the school was looking for this year. If I just didn’t fit what they wanted then the rejection isn’t a remark on my talent. So going forward I know that sometimes you simply aren’t what the school is looking for and that has made me feel better going in to the audition season.

What school did you audition at that cut you on the spot in front of everyone? I haven’t heard of this.

I just wanted to let you know that Fordham doesn’t have musical theatre. It’s a straight acting program.

The school I auditioned and got cut the day of was Millikin University. The don’t cut you in front of everyone, but they take all the people out of the room who did not get accepted, leaving those who were accepted in their theatre auditorium. I wouldn’t have known what this meant but one of the current students actually told me what being taken in to the hallway would mean earlier that day. If you aren’t accepted in to their BFA program, you have an “exit meeting” where you are taken in to a room and given a pamphlet that promotes their BA program.

ylimecole- That’s a tough way to do it for sure. I guess that there is no easy way.

Our D got her first “no” from Texas St via email through Acceptd last night. Mom and I are disappointed, but D just said “Oh well, on to the next one.” Maybe what we’ll all find out when this is over is that our kids are tougher than we are.

I have mixed feelings about the pre-screens as well. It saves time and money for the schools and the families, but it doesn’t give a true picture of who you really are, what you can do, and how hard you’ll work.

Stay confident and stay positive, and you will get a spot.

ylimecole- Millikin is one of our D’s audition schools during Chicago Unifieds. Did they give you any info about how many audition vs. accepted?

Sorry CHM about TX State and OMG to Millikin’s process. Am email is too hard for them??

Did your D prescreen for MT at TX State? My daughter got a no to their acting program, but a yes to MT.

She did the prescreen for MT at TX ST. Their “no” message said that she should consider the BA acting program instead. Not what she wants. Actually, what she really wants is an MT program that is opera-leaning. She’s a lyric soprano and hasn’t really done much to develop her belting skills.

GSOMTMom- I forgot to say thanks for the kind words. She has a lot of auditions to go (13+), so I’m confident that she’ll be offered a spot somewhere. We’re pretty realistic about her strengths/weaknesses, and so is she.

A word about Millikin: over on their MT school page, there are some harsh words about their “cut” program. It may just be a disgruntled former student thing, but it would be wise to look into.
My older D has a friend who was cut from OU theatre after his sophomore year (not sure of all the details) and it really throws these kids for a loop. It can take a while to regroup and get back on track.
Cut programs are not as common as they used to be, but buyer beware!

The same things are said about U of Arizona.

@cheeseheadmike : I think Millikin takes 25 with the intention of definitely cutting some sophomore year, which they call being “redirected”, because then you are forced to change to BA. If your daughter considers a senior showcase to be a priority when choosing a college, I would also tell you that they require mt majors to audition for that showcase. They don’t all get to go to the showcase in New York. In Millikins words, they are only taking those who are “marketable” to the showcase.

My D was invited to audition in less than a week after prescreen was uploaded. Hopefully you will here before Christmas.

Good news!!!

Last night I submitted my Pace prescreen and just now received my email that I got a callback and will be moving on to live auditions.

Hopefully everybody will hear soon! Considering it took them less than 24 hours to get back with me, everyone should get a pretty quick response.

Great news, ylimecole! CONGRATULATIONS!
