So I'm a freshman at a prestigious ivy league school and I'm currently taking Organic Chemistry I. I haven't been doing too well, (getting slightly below average on each test) and right now, unless I beast the final, it looks like I'm slated to get a B/B-. I really want to get into a top 10 med school, but if i don't, it's not the end of the world. I have 2 options

1) Withdraw from the course and take it next year, in which case a "W" will show up on my transcript, but I'll be better prepared to do well next year.

2) Continue with Orgo, and risk getting a B/B-. In the best case (albeit unlikely), I'll do phenomenally well on the final, and end up with a B+ for the class.

It depends on which school you're at as well, some won't even let you withdraw at this point, and even if they did I wouldn't recommend it if you think you can legitimately pull out a B.

My school's (Penn) advising has always preached strongly against W's on the grounds that med schools will see them as a substitute for very poor grades (read: C or below), so in this light a B would clearly be the better option.

Here at Georgetown, 70% of the class gets a B+/B/B- in orgo. Withdrawing for fear of getting a B- is literally...literally the dumbest idea i've ever heard.

but anyways, if you manage to get a B, I don't think you should take it over again. you'll have plenty of other science classes to boost up your gpa
