Prescreen results

Anybody hear from Indiana University yet?

Thanks for the help. I will try calling Eastman and BoCo on Monday. Hopefully I will have the Westminster done this week, I have everything done but the essay, which I am just touching up.

has anyone heard back from Northwestern about an on-campus audition?

I’ve been reading this thread for about a week now, so I thought I’d contribute.

Applying to grad school for vocal performance- soprano. Applied to Roosevelt, Northwestern, DePaul, Eastman, McGill, CCM, FSU, and Northern Arizona.

Did not pass the prescreen for CCM, Northern Arizona, or Depaul.

Will be auditioning for Roosevelt (do not require prescreen), FSU, and Northwestern so far.

Waiting to hear from McGill and Eastman.

I just wish they would tell me so I can buy plane tickets and take time off work!!!

S found out via email on 12-16 that he is invited to Indiana for Vocal Music Education’s January audition. We received the details ten days later.

I called Boston Conservatory and Eastman. Eastman had a recording saying that the are busy listening to prescreenings and reviewing applications.

Boston said that they are currently running 10 business days behind and have only opened about half of their applications.

Guess we all have to be patient so more…

D received email today–passed the pre-screen for Eastman Vocal Performance/Music Ed Voice. Wow…!

Just have to vent about UCLA. We called today. This is how it went:

Me: My son still has not received an audition date, and the confirmation form is due Jan. 8th
Them: What’s his name?
Me: (give his name)
Them: Yes, we have received his music supplement, but his audition confirmation was missing.
Me: Right. That’s because he didn’t have an audition date to confirm. He emailed you regarding this and was told to wait for the email with the date. He has received other emails from you, but not this one. (he then confirms the correct email address)
Them: Well, his audition is Feb. 6 at 11:30a.m.
Me: Could you possibly resend the email, so we have all the relevant information?
Them: No. We already sent it. We can’t send it again. It’s an automated system. He should just be here at 11am.
Me: Before you said 11:30am.
Them: Well, he needs to be here a half hour earlier.
Me: Is there anything else we need to know?
Them: No.

Then I hang up and realize nowhere on the website does it say whether he should bring a backup CD (Jamie Ebersol etc.) for his prepared pieces. This is all it says:

"We do not provide a repertoire list. A minimum of two selections should be prepared. All traditional jazz instruments including voice, piano and guitar are eligible for an audition. Saxophone is the only eligible woodwind instrument.

Accompanists are not provided. If you will need additional equipment such as guitar amplifiers, please indicate this on your Audition Confirmation form. A drum set is provided.

Following your prepared performance, you will be expected to perform improvisations with a backing rhythm section or Jamie Ebersol tape (provided by the department). Sight-reading may also be asked of you. A brief interview will follow."

Now my son has to call back and try and squeeze this additional bit of information out of them. It’s just very frustrating to have the people on the other end so curt and cavalier about something that means so much to our kids!!! And believe me, he never received this email!!!

Jazz/shreddermom, that IS frustrating. Sorry…

Another thing to be aware of, we learned for rhythm instruments, is that even where audition guidelines are specified (e.g., you will audition with a rhythm section) they were almost NEVER as specified online. Sometimes sight reading was added; often my son was playing alone. It’s important to not be thrown by the divergence from the stated audition guidelines. My son was, and it made the process painful.

Passed University of Michigan’s composition pre-screening! In-person interview in March is scheduled.

Just got an e-mail today. Passed Eastman vocal performance prescreen =]

Re: Indiana. In 2008, my S (vocal performance with interest in early music) had not heard from Indiana by Jan 18 and emailed to inquire. They emailed back the next day saying he was scheduled to audition the last week of February. So it might be worth emailing or calling. It is tough when you have to make plane reservations. here’s the thread about many people’s experience–it is from two years ago but I know I read it several times daily back then! Sorry if someone has posted this thread already. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/music-major/436815-audition-scheduled-iu-jacobs-school-music.html?highlight=indiana+audition

Rose, re:BoCO- did you ask them whether or not they did have all of your documentation? If I remember, that was your most important question for them. If they don’t have anyplace on the web where you can check to see what they have/don’t have then I would suggest you call them again or send an e-mail. They won’t schedule anything if your file isn’t complete and if you have reason to think that something may be missing, don’t wait.

Neumes: Thanks for the above thread. I think I’m going to e-mail them tonight to see if they’ve processed my application yet.

MezzoM: My question to them was whether or not they had my documents. I explained to them that the online status check said they had recieved nothing, although I was positive I had sent everything. She said that hardly anything had been updated electronically and that they were 10 business days behind with application review. I told her that I had sent out my transcipts as early as November 11… She still said not to worry, and that if I hadn’t reciveed any notification by Feb, I could call again.

I just want to say one OT thing… I think it’s so great that so many parents are on here, helping. While my parents love me very much, they do not support my musical career. They feel my decisions are immature and very poorly made, and do not approve of any of the music conservatories I am applying to. I have had no help from them with this entire process. So I hope all your children appreciate you. :-)

I’m getting nervous about Eastman, because I sent my app in pretty early, and I still haven’t heard anything…

Just curious, has anyone heard from Juilliard? I’m tired of jumping every time my phone vibrates thinking it’s an email from them… hahaha

Sopranorose - I hope you can find the support you need here - and I hope that one day your parents will come around. You are brave to set out on this path. Never hesitate to call the schools when you are concerned about scheduling or are concerned about a missing document. Most of them are there to help and want to help you through the process. I’ll reiterate that BoCo has a reputation for being disorganized so stay on top of them in particular.

Does anyone know if Boston Conservatory e-mails you an audition date or if you have to sign up via there application website?

Schedule an Audition/Interview

Thanks for your interest in setting up an audition/interview for entrance into The Boston Conservatory.
