sorry to hear about Oberlin Maybe we will unknowingly bump into eachother at the UNT auditions - mine is at the end of January. Currently looking for plane tickets - so expensive!!

My UNT audition is at the end of February; plane tickets ARE expensive! Weāre planning on driving to the other ones, but UNT is just too far away for that. As for Oberlin, Iāll live. They sent me a letter and I was really disappointed, but hopefully Iāll get better news from the other schools, which are still very good. Thanks though :)

USC results are out. I got rejected, but oh well I guess.

S invited to USC Thornton for Jazz Piano.

Rejected from USCā¦and it was my top school and my current teacher is there. sigh. Itās not fair!

Passed prescreening at both USC and Oberlin for classical voice! Yay! :)

Lifeofsolitude ā Saw your other post about passing CIM. Donāt worry! If you can pass CIM prescreening for violin you will definitely pass a lot more (I saw your huge list of applications). USC is a fine school but based much on academic merit as well as musical talent. You will be just fine :)

Congrats nyboundsoprano! That is wonderful news!

Congrats on Oberlin (and USC) nyboundsoprano!

DS passed the pre-screening for University of Miami for jazz bass.

@violoncello thanks. USC was my top school and it kinda sucks that I didnāt pass. I would have been happy if I had at least passed. I like CIM but Iām afraid I wonāt pass Mannes, NEC, Northwestern, Rice, UNCC, UCLA, and Peabody. Ahhhh! When do letters for other schools come out? Iām getting anxious!

Iām happy for everyone else but I feel like I know people that passed that shouldnāt have. And it might sound bitter and selfish of me but itās true. I think perhaps itās political or who knows.

@Life - so sorry to hear - had my fingers crossed for you. Sounds like you have a lot more on the list and Iām sure you will get more passes. CIM is not a lower tier school and you should be very proud. The music field is full of āwho knows whoā situations. I learned with the first kid going to college that there is no such thing as a sure thing anymore even when music isnāt a part of it. If USC is still at the top of your list next year - give it another shot, they actually have a good reputation for taking transfers - just keep working away at both academics and your instrument.

@Lifeofsolitude- again, please do not spend valuable time trying to decipher the whys and wherefores of admissions offices (easy for me to say, right?!). Some schools have a āsoundā or a ātypeā they prefer and there are always the places set aside for legacy students, etc, that you just donāt know about. Weāve all known students who were turned down from one place and accepted at much better schools, and I know of one who was a double legacy at a great school and was turned down and also rejected at other top schools; sheās now at Rice, which was the only school who accepted her. Go figure.
There probably wonāt be much info coming out until January now and that does make it really hard when reservations have to be made. Youād think that schools would understand this much and move at a faster pace and is something to mention-or have parents say something- on audition days when administration members ask for comments. If you really have to know in order to make plans, do try to call tomorrow morning or send an e-mail tonight (a lot of staff check their e-mail from home at night).

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Itās sad because the faculty is getting smaller and smaller by the year. 2 teachers in the string department are leaving and one is going on sabbatical this next year so itās going to be very tight next year. I hope I at least make it to the other schools Iāve applied to. Weāll see!

@Lifeofsolitude - Thatās EXACTLY how I felt when I first found out about getting rejected from Oberlin. I had a sample lesson there with one of the voice professors and he made it seem like Iād definitely get an audition (he said a lot of good things) and I attended their summer program a year ago. I know of people who got in (early review) or got an audition that I didnāt think were very good (these are people from the summer program). But I realized that there are a lot of different factors involved. It might be that, while you may be very good, there could be some extremely outstanding people that auditioned and they decided to just hear them audition and not anyone else. It could be because of the faculty, like you said in your last post. It could be because they accepted a lot of string majors last year and donāt have room in their orchestra. It could be many many factors that you donāt have control over. Oberlin was my top choice; I absolutely loved the campus, the students, the faculty, and everything about it. It was really really hard to not even get an audition; frankly it feels like they wonāt give you the time of day to listen to you. It hurts! And it is frustrating to wait for so long. Itās agonizing! But it looks like you applied to a ton of other really good schools, one of them is bound to accept you and youāll get an excellent education! Trust me, I know exactly what youāre going through here.

Thanks, Hedge. I wish they would at least hire more faculty so that they could accommodate more people. I know that the people that applied were really good and I knew that I had a chance that I wouldnāt make it. Itās just disappointing because it was my top school and I was so emotionally invested in it. Itās okay, iāve realized that perhaps I wasnāt meanāt to attend there. I just hope I get some more auditions and less rejections. So far Iāve gotten 2 rejections and 2 acceptances. 7 more to go!!!

@Lifeofsolitude and hedgehogopera - My S went through this process last year, so I understand the stress and pressure you are feeling right now. I also understand the disappointment of not passing the prescreen or getting accepted to a favorite school. I just want to offer one peice of advice and I hope you take it in the positive spirit in which it is intended. Be careful about posting negative comments out of frustration and disappointment on a public forum. It is a small world out there and many posters recognize each other by the information they post. When you say you were better than others who were accepted or that people who were accepted are not very good, it could come back to haunt you. You never know when or where you might run into those musicians again. Such comments could hurt you in the long run.

Best of luck to both of you with the rest of your prescreen and audition results!

SoundMom - Thanks for the advice. I guess I didnāt realize that I probably shouldnāt have said that before. Oops. I shouldnāt compare myself to other people, especially since voice is such an opinion-run field, and I definitely shouldnāt compare myself to people of different voice parts! I was just disappointed, I guess, and I wanted to rant a little haha :)

@SoundMom ā thanks for the advice and Iām not trying to post ānegativeā comments but in my opinion, I feel like some people that I know passed that shouldnāt have. I may be āwrongā but thatās just how I personally feel. I know that Iām not better than others but I felt like I could have done better and should have had the opportunity to live audition. But, thatās okay.

@Lifeofsolitude- Iām a violin major that just got rejected from USC prescreening too:(

Does anybody know when Carnegie Mellonās prescreening results come out?

Found out yesterday that D got NEC audition for classical voice. I am hearing rumblings that the others out there probably wonāt come out now until Jan.

Anyone out there with experiences waiting for classical voice prescreens for Curtis, northwestern, Julliard, Boston Conservatory, about when did you find out?
