Congratulations to everyone getting their prescreening results. It’s a relief to know one way or the other so you can start planning next steps.

@spanishmezzo - yes, you can pass prescreen and still be denied admission to the university if you do not meet the admission standards such as gpa, test scores, etc. In previous cycles we’ve seen a few students go all the way to getting accepted to the conservatory and end up with a rejection. So be sure to keep up your grades!

NOOOOOO!!! Denied from Rice prescreen for voice! It was my top choice!!! Agh! Whyy?! I don’t understand how I can pass NEC, USC and Oberlin and not Rice :(

Does anyone know if Rice sent out prescreening results for all instruments? I see responses for voice and strings, but not winds. Do rejections come my email as well? D hasn’t received anything, and the offices are closed until Jan. 2.

I think that for at least some instruments/voices, Rice is often considerably more selective than places like NEC, USC, and Oberlin (and perhaps than any schools except for Curtis and Colburn). Rice’s entering undergrad class in music is very small compared to many music schools; as well, Rice tends to get quite a high yield, so that even further limits the offers it makes (I have heard that some Rice studios regularly have 100% yields, whereas top-drawer places like NEC and CIM after often happy with 35-40% yields).

nybound: If you have passed the NEC, USC and Oberlin prescreens, then you will undoubtedly have some excellent choices. Any audition-based admission is bound to have an element of randomness in it, and this randomness seems more pronounced with voice, and, as you well know, there are generally more sopanos applying per spot than any other instrument or voice type.

Well it looks like a lot of us are in the same boat. Unfortunately, D was ALSO rejected from Rice prescreening for VP (oddly enough it was her top choice as well). But at least thats one less plane ticket and hotel to book :)

On the bright side I am happy to report that she HAS passed MSM, NEC, and UMiami (Frost SOM) for VP. We were warned that getting into Rice is exceedingly difficult, but as we have learned through this wonderful forum, your chances of getting in are even less if you don’t apply haha!

In the past Rice accepted no more than 8 undergrads in voice hoping for no more than 4-5 to attend. Her class of 4 was large. I believe last year may have been less than that. As violindad mentions Rice yields have gone up and 2 of the voice studios are in flux so who knows how many acceptances they are targeting. When DD auditioned 5 years ago there was no pre-screening for voice. That is how much the program has grown in popularity.

Last year when I applied they accepted 7 undergrads for voice and 5 chose to attend. So yes I think the yield rate has CERTAINLY gone up. A number of them turned down spots at big names like Juilliard, Eastman and one even turned down Curtis.
