I have been meaning to mention that I met the new Pomona president at the winter reception in San Francisco. She really looks like an awesome hire. Much of that job is PR (my father had the same job at a couple of universities), and she hit all of the right notes in her general remarks to the huge throng of alumni and parents (and a few students), and in her ability to connect on an individual basis with those who approached her to discuss whatever Pomona thing they had on their minds. Such a breath of fresh air versus Oxtoby.
Kudos to Pomona for pulling off such a large event. I’m sure there has never been a larger Pomona contingent ever assembled outside of Southern California.
I haven’t met her personally. I saw her at the Family Weekend in Feb, but I love everything she writes about the need for curiosity in a college. I think she is a good fit for the college and hoping she continues to build a community of scholars searching for truth aimed at the greater good.
President Starr is phenomenal. Intelligent, articulate, a true champion of the well-rounded liberal arts experience with her past work combining art, english, and neuroscience. But also deeply caring, involved, and enthusiastically positive. Her messages to the community (linked below) have stood out to alumni and students for being comforting, well-informed, and charitable.

Many of my friends, who are presently attending Pomona, have randomly chanced upon President Starr as they were walking through the campus, and she always took the time to ask their name and where they were from. She has been so active in the community, attending alumni events, visiting Pomona-Pitzer games, participating open hours for departments and campus organizations, and hosting gatherings at her home to get to know students, faculty, and staff.
I was very thrilled by the decision (for her fit and the significance of her hiring), and continue to be inspired by what she does and says. I wish her the very best.
