Presidential Scholarship

MDdad2012 – I was told on Friday morning (2/24) from our Admissions Counselor that all Scholarship notifications had been sent out.

congrats to everyone who got a scholarship!

I don’t understand why I received zero scholarship money?
4.6w/3.9uw GPA with 7 AP classes
2070 SAT
31 ACT
Honors College, Engineering
Great ECs, essays, recs
I have 19 community college credits on top of AP credits

Low SATs maybe? I don’t plan on staying for four years, so maybe that is why?
What does UMD look for when distributing merit scholarships?
Parents are not paying for any of my education so I am worried

It looks like merit aid is very SAT-driven at Maryland. My daughter had 4.6 weighted GPA, 6 AP classes, 2120/2400 - 1320/1600 SAT and didn’t get any merit aid. Low 1300’s is probably not enough.

I got 1310 on my SATs and I got 2k a year so I don’t think that is all they are decided on…

haha I like your sn^

hahahaha thanks  It is something that I said one time in reference to my dancing ability…

My son received a President’s scholarship for $5000 per year. His stats are 4.5 weighted GPA and 35 ACT. In-state. We are very grateful.

This whole thing is very strange - my son has exactly the same stat but got none. 4.5/35 (one try)/in-state/NMF/honors.

@momofapplicant - Congrats to your son.

@skillzofawalnut, you are right. I am sure there are other factors. I think you being OOS might be a factor in your case, even though 2K is not a huge dent for OOS tuition.

@FromMD.

Interesting…had exact opposite experience as you.
Got tons of $$ & help from UMD & OSU and never heard back from Pitt (great school) after the Sept acceptance letter. Just goes to show ya there’s no exact formula. Congrats on having a college search strategy that provided you enviable options.

Well now I’m bummed out.

you might want to check to see if umd received all you fafsa/financial aid documents. that’s what happened to me so now i have to wait…

@meaza5

Who should I contact to see if they received my FAFSA/Financial Aid documents?

The FAFSA/Financial Aid stuff doesn’t influence these kind of scholarships (merit aid). I’m not sure when they do the FA packaging.

mdtomd they sent me an email

and it does affect it, they won’t notify you about any awards whether merit/need-based until they have all the documents. at least thats what the lady i talked to said…

Son received the letter today - 32k over 4 years. We are IS. I understand the last batch of merit scholarship letters went out on Thursday… UMBC letter came today too - 72k over 4 years. Good day for him. For those of you still waiting, good luck.

Thanks FromMd,

Any chance you can share your son’s stats? I’m instate also and this seemed to have breathed some more hope into me possibly receiving a letter. If they were mailed out Thursday…do you think there’s still a chance for me to receive one?

Well, look for today’s delivery. I am no expert on mail delivery but I suppose it depends on where you are. We live about 40 min away in MC. I put his stats before but here is again…

 • 35 ACT one sitting (36/36/36/33)
 • 3.79 UW/4.5W
 • NMF
 • 8 APs, all others honors
 • some AP award (can’t remember exact title)
 • ~500 community service
 • Asian
 • from public magnet school in MD

Hope the mailman delivers a good news for you…

Thank you so much for responding so soon. Your son certainly deserves the letter he received, if not more and by comparison my stats don’t match up as well.

2000 SAT (1330 M+CR)
3.98 UW, 4.65 W
6 APs, all other honors
Highly-touted science internship
White, male
In-state

And I live roughly 45 mins away in FC, but I would LOVE just 2K a year. Anyways, thanks again and the best of luck to your son!!
