President's Scholars Program

Does anyone know when we're notified if we became finalists for the President's Scholars Program? Plane ticket prices are going to go up the longer you wait; and if I did manage to qualify, I don't know how my parents would feel about buying tickets April 1.

Iā€™ve been wondering the very same thing! Can anyone clarify??

I emailed admissions about it a couple weeks ago and they said that finalists are notified after regular decision letters are sent.

Oh, and if youā€™re a finalist they pay your airfare. So no problems there. Does anyone know how many finalists are chosen?

Thank you.

Is the interview only a one day thing? Or are there events Sunday as well?

I rememebered I had read something about the number of finalists. Iā€™m not sure if this was what I was thinking of, but I someone said that two years ago it was 50. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/harvey-mudd-college/674597-psp-presidential-scholars-gather.html

I think itā€™s just one day, but Sunday and Monday are Admitted Students Weekend so there will be other stuff.

Ah! Exciting!

We have to pay for our own airfare if weā€™re attending the admitted students weekend right?

As far as I know, yes.

My daughter received the Presidentā€™s Scholarship at Santa Clara University (near home), but really wants to go the HMC. Has anyone received a ā€˜likely letterā€™ for HMC?

April 10-11 is such a busy weekend! Arcadia track meet, MIT Campus Preview Weekend, UCLA Engineering Open House, etc.

If my daughter goes to MIT CPW, but is a Presidentā€™s Scholarship finalist, do you think HMC will pay for her airfare from Boston to HMC and the from HMC back home to SFO??

That seems more expensive, but who knows? You could try calling them and asking.

Ceemom: Mudd has replied to your daughter about PSP already?

Sorry, I just wanted to make sure.

No, but she wants me to buy tickets to fly her to MIT CPW because she got in ED there, but if Mudd can provide a good financial aid package she is ready to stay in CA ā€“ not sure how she would handle the weather and the long distance from home in MA!

I think the odds of a Presidents Scholarship are so low that we are leaning toward MIT.

Ceemom: Congrats! Iā€™m sure your daughter will be successful no matter where she goes. Did she apply ED to Mudd? Iā€™m not sure whether ED-ers are more likely to get PSP because theyā€™re ā€œlocked-inā€ by the ED contract.

MIT is an EA by the way

In the past about half of the 50 finalists got offers, and maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of those who got offers chose to accept. Looked at another way, the scholarships offers go to about 1% of applicants. I donā€™t know what yield on these scholarship offers Mudd currently anticipates, or whether the recession has had an impact on funding. However, your odds could be pretty decent if you are a finalist for this one (better than for some other large merit scholarships elsewhere). I am sure Mudd admissions would tell you if you asked. It is an amazing opportunity.

So do those black envelopes that are arriving in Southern California right now include financial aid estimates and/or information about Mudd Scholar or Presidents or RIF scholar finalists?

Not as far as I see. Letter says ā€œif you applied for financial aid you should expect to hear from the Office of Financial Aid within a week or so of receiving your admission letterā€. No mention of merit scholarships.

The finalists for the Presidentā€™s Scholarship were notified by email on Monday. They were told to not talk about it until they received their acceptance package in the mail.

Anyone on here chosen as a finalist? I havenā€™t heard of anyone yet personallyā€¦ and no one on the facebook group has said that they have; if any of them have, I donā€™t know.

My D was chosen as a finalist.
