Well, just arrived with my s for the preview tomorrow. this is my first time seeing the campus. It is SWEET!

I recall my first visit with D. I AGREE!.

Ah ha...the secret leaks out. ;)

What's a preview? My daughter is waiting for March 18 - she was deferred back in December and admissions told me everything about her was great EXCEPT the one point shortfall in critical reading on the ACT or the 20 point shortball in the same area of the SAT. She has a 28 composite but is a math head not a strong reader. anyway, her ACT critical reading went from 21 to 26 so we're hoping for good news. She's got a 3.72, two sports for all four years, 61st out of about 370 and applying for engineering. I hope that we need to attend a Preview but can you please tell me what it is so that I don't have to mess with Google? :) Thanks, Sue

It is not necessary to attend PREVIEW. It is just a great way to tour the campus and learn about FSU. Once accepted, your daughter would be required to attend an orientation session in the summer.

I believe only admitted students and parents or guest are allowed to attend preview/orientation. They go over everything you need to know and you register for your classes.

You are correct.
PREVIEW is designed to help ACCEPTED students decide if FSU is where they want to attend. It is not mandatory.
ORIENTATION is mandatory and that is where you select your courses and get ready for your first semester.

Preview is an excellent opportunity to do some very significant things at Florida State:

Meet with faculty in the departments that interest you and discuss your goals. (Personal note: D1 met with a female biochemistry professor during Preview that she connected with...end result was D1 selecting FSU, majoring in biochemistry and conducting research in that professor's lab. Superb opportunity!)

Take care of any lingering questions by asking personally.

Get a current student to show you their dorm.

Get your FSU ID card and set up your bank account before the rush at Orientation - assuming that you decide FSU is for you.

I went to preview today. I learned a lot. :)

I should have gotten my FSU card but it was so cold today, and I am pretty sure I looked terrible and would have taken a horrible picture. I'm going to the first orientation date all by myself. =S

I'm going to the preview next week. Looking forward to it a lot. I've already sent in my deposit, so I guess I'll be able to have my ID card made and get everything set up.

It does not take long to get the FSU ID card...when you're not standing behind hundreds of other students, that is!

We sat in the back of the "welcome" part at 8:30a. Then we went directly to the Admissions table (1st in line) for the deposit receipt, then to the ID office (2nd in line). In all, it took 10 mins to get the ID card for my s.

YES, get the ID card at Preview if at all possible. The lines can be an hour long at Orientation(or more if you get there later in the day), and you really want to get that early. One you have it, it opens doors, literally.

Also, go to the SunTrust bank and set up the free FSU linked checking account at Preview. If you have leftover Prepaid/Bright Futures/scholarship/book awards it is much faster getting it back by an instant transfer to your card than by waiting weeks for a check. And the same FSU card is a DEBIT card for the Suntrust Account. So you can place your spending money on it and use the card in place of cash NOT ONLY around campus BUT around Tally and in your community. It can be used as a DEBIT card wherever you can swipe and put in a PIN number--fast food restaurants, department stores, Walgreens, Walmart. It can't be used where a business takes a DEBIT card like a credit card and swipes and you sign, but anywhere you can swipe and put in a PIN. And so many more businesses have the little keypads attached to their registers.

The Suntrust account is a no fee checking account. You can get money out at no charge at any SunTrust money machine. You can set up an online link to your account and wake up to check your balance every day. You can order checks (they are cheaper at Checks Unlimited etc online) but just remember to balance you checkbook and remember when you go online to check your balance that checks can take days/weeks to clear. JUST DON'T OVERDRAW.

On the bright side, they will refund your FIRST $35 charge when you stop in and ask and explain it was the first time....... D can vouch for that ;). Hasn't been a second time.

Actually, I believe you can visit if you have applied and are waiting for an answer and want to check out the campus. It is an rather informal event. Obviously you can't give a admissions deposit, get an FSU card, etc. You can register and you can just show up. THEY REALLY LIKE YOU TO REGISTER BUT THEY WILL NOT TURN YOU AWAY IF YOU HAVE NOT. We visited Preview and met a student who was waiting for an admission. Call admissions if you want to go to one and ask.... You need a schedule of events, a map, etc. The Preview site on FSU.EDU is not just for admitted students to access.

I laugh when I hear about how easy is it today to get your ID card and get registered.

When I was a freshman in the 1970s this exercise was a test of endurance and mettle...you waited in line in the summer heat and humidity behind hundreds of other freshmen to get your ID card, then you got to go to Tully Gym (no A/C) to pull cards for classes. At Tully Gym, you tried to figure out a schedule then waited in a large line for each opportunity to pull a card...if there were any cards, that is. All upperclassmen pulled cards first and lowly freshmen got the leavings. The hotter it got the shorter tempers and the longer the lines became and I'm sure you get the picture.

It was not a five miles, uphill each way, barefoot in the snow, eating dirt and glad of it type of event but it is much better today. :)

I really wanted to go to this one but had to reschedule for next week.

Did anyone get a glimpse of the whole heritage day 2009 thing?

FSU.com :: Florida State University celebrates Heritage Day 2009

That would have been very informative.. to know more about FSU's heritage

Alright, so only people on the waitlist have the option to go, right? Not anyone who just wants the visit-I know they have limited of space, that is why they have campus visits.

FSU Preview
"On behalf of our faculty, staff, and students, we are pleased to invite you and your family to "preview" Florida State University. Preview is a series of special visitation days for students who have been ADMITTED to the University."

They persuading you guys to join the incoming class-so go to the preview!

parent2noles - I remember having a Friday 1PM registration time for the fall of '74. What a horrible experience! I got cards for 3 of my classes only to find out the 4th class I wanted was full...then having to back track and change 2 of the 3 to be able to fit a different 4th class. I felt like I ran a marathon. LOL

My son is giving tours of Landis. If a guy gives you the tour of Landis ask him if "plk1981" is his Mom.

It's exciting to see all the kids and parents with preview packets walking around the campus. I live in a single in Gilchrist if anybody would like to stop by to see another room besides whatever they do in the tour they are welcome! I've already had 2 sets of people randomly knock to compare rooms and simply to check out what to bring/how to organize. Just pm me!
