Previews!

Im from SoCal and no one offered me that :(

You have to ask them for it. I asked them if they can pay for my travel, and they said they have some leftover money they could use on me. I was just very respectful in my e-mail, and told them that this trip can determine whether I attend Williams or Pomona.

Pomona! I love that place. But I’m still going to Williams

I was an early write, and they paid for my trip there, but I live really far away, so maybe that was why? My letter also said they would pay for transportation expenses and I contacted the RSVP Sarah Varnos almost as soon as I got it…I don’t know that there are any special requirements to get our trip paid, I think it’s just on a basis of who needs it, maybe? I’m just glad to be going!

Gotta love those purple cows :)

Does anyone know where we’ll be staying during the Preview though? I have heard that we’ll be in dorms, but does that mean we’ll be with a host student or something? Sleeping bag was one of the suggestions in the letter they just sent (has anyone else gotten that update letter yet?) but I don’t know that it will fit in my bag, since it also says to bring only one! Also I was trying to find information on the freshman housing to kind of have an idea of which places I wanted to visit and see if we’re allowed to request housing at a particular place, but there’s almost no information about the housing at all =\ anyone know where I can get it?

Williams mom here. Don’t worry about sleeping arrangements. A sleeping bad is great, but the common rooms have couches. And then there’s the floor of the host’s room.

Have fun you all.

Artemis, i also got that email.

As for the sleeping bag, I think i might carry it onto the plane, or not take it at all if it’s a hassle.

I don’t think I got any email.

Is there a specific place online where you can find the Williams Previews schedule of classes?
It said in the little pamphlet that you sign up there for classes, but I want to see my options ahead of time :)

So excited!

It’d be interesting if we met but didn’t know… I hate this internet thing, it makes me meet people without actually meeting them! And adds a lot of mystery to life, it’s annoying -.-

I think I’m ditching the sleeping bag, it’s too big to carry. I’ll just sleep on the couch without complaining lol.

Listen up folks, do not rely on being waited on, and do not demand anything of your hosts. If you do, you may be disappointed. When I went, I did not care where I slept, even if my pre-arranged host did a no show. If you want to be catered, then you might be setting yourself up for a reality show.

Take that time to see and hear and feel the campus out. Be bold, brave and find whether the curiosity that brought you here will reward you.

It’s a great place for individuals who like the challenge of staking a claim for Williiams.

HorseRadish, you seem a bit of an extreme pessimist. Not everyone is naive and arrogant. We’re all saying how happy we are to be going. I’m not sure where we indicated we wanted to be catered anything.

I just dislike people who speak so negatively. Cheer up! Whoever is meant to go there will like it, and those who don’t like it, won’t go. It’s how that works.

Dear Artemis:

You obviously have read into my thread far and away beyond what was stated.

There is no pessimism there. Nor extreme pessimism. Perhaps realism. As a realist, I expect nothing and gain everything. When one bears great expectations, one is merely setting oneself up for disappointment.

Experience teaches.

The day I arrived, my host was not there. In fact, I did not find this person until 2 A.M. That did not mean anything to me, as I found a counch in the basement to sleep on. Unlike other preview guests, a number were offset with the lack of attention or some other insignificant detail.

The purpose of my statement was to have all previewers be prepared to explore, enjoy and revel in their final moments before committing themselves to the best four years of their lives.

If this offends you, then this is your problem, not mine.

so, im all set to go to previews, but ive got a question:
when you arrive, where do you go? who do you meet? do you carry your luggage around with you everywhere - are you meeting your host and dropping off your stuff right away?

im driving over with my mom from boston airport on monday morning, and im unsure about what happens once i arrive at williams

did you guys who RSVP’ed receive some more info about previews besides the sheet that came with acceptance? or do you just think that everything’s fine with just that info - once you arrive at williams its all pretty self-explanatory?

maybe im just overthinking things…but it is better to be safe than sorry!

thanks in advance :)

DO NOT carry luggage around. Have a knapsack with a few items like a toothbrush and a change of underwear, socks, sweater, rain-gear. Keep most of your stuff with your parents, as I did. If you need anything, you know where to find them.

If your host does not show up at the time you arrive, fine, just go to your assigned building, park your things with someone there, and go look around until your host shows. Remember, they may going out with friends or indisposed, so do not expect them to sit with you. On the other hand, they may invite you. Regardless, find something to do. There will be plenty of upper class students to show you all the buildings.

Also, relax, the students will be helpful. Just be kind, gracious and open. Do not demand anything. Savor your experiences and create your own Williams Preview experience.

You will be given vouchers for meals and some literature.

Cheers and enjoy the ride.

Chandler - if you are still looking for the list of classes for the Preview, it is at

fiftyplus: Thank you so much!!!
I was looking for that for a while… I must’ve been looking stupidly
Thanks again.

thanks for the reply, HorseRadish

but my main question was just where do you go to check in?

For Previews-

Registration at Faculty House /Alumni Center, 8am to 5pm

You’ll find it on the schedule- http://www.williams.edu/admission/previews_09_invite.pdf

oh my, thanks tuppence

silly me :stuck_out_tongue: can’t believe i didnt notice it on the schedule

Just ask someone. The words “I’m a pre-frosh” will probably stop most of us, and we’ll help you out. (We’ll think you’re a pre-frosh, too, because we haven’t seen you around, but we won’t say so for fear of offense).

Also, look at a campus map before you go, so that you are a little oriented before arriving. Every common room will have a couch, and most will be open to you. Some of the best pre-frosh experience happen when you stay with upper-classmen.

One more thing: though you won’t have a card, most people around will card you in anywhere you need to go. But that’s a privilege for you, and not the people you traveled with. This is YOUR PREVIEWS.

Ephtastic, what kind of stuff is the card used for?
