@thumper1 why you want to know where I live ? LOL
Your situation is complicated…did you submit a FAFSA when you went to,the community college? Or,wherever you are transferring from?
which parent did you put on that?
I’m only asking because if your FAFSA has the wrong parent on it…or,somehow the 2015 tax filing status of your parent is messed up…that is a much bigger issue than submitting a non-filers statement. OR getting a tax transcript.
@thumper1 yes, i submit my fafsa when I went to community college. I have been using my dad information and it is good so far with my college. I also have to submit the verification form to UCI and they also accepted it. It is just that UCSD requires more papers than UCI so it is more complicated.
I think I’ve got it…
So…your dad IS your custodial parent.
You used only his info on the fafsa, right?
I making any certain comments on the tax dependency thing…but maybe someone else will. I believe if you are a college student, under 24…and you go,to your dad’s for all vacations, etc…I believe he CAN declare you as a dependent. But I’ll let the tax experts chime in. College students typically still are considered residents of their parent home.
Anyway…yes…you can get the non-filers statement at the IRS office.
Re: the tax transcript…I’m not sure that you can get your dad’s. He may need to do,that.
When you call the college on Monday…see if they will take a signed copy of his tax return until you can get that tax transcript.
Then again…if there IS something wrong with your dad’s submitted taxes…that is another whole,story. Hope,that is not the case.
@thumper1 thank youuu
If your dad paid more than 50% of your support, he should be able to claim you on his taxes. You said you didn’t earn that much. Unless he gave your mom permission to claim you, as mentioned earlier.
The parent you use on FAFSA is supposed to be the one you lived with more. Or if you live with neither parent, the one that supports you more.
Who pays for your apartment?
You need to get the non filing letter and your dad should go with you to get his tax transcript. And fill out the papers they need.
If you can’t get the IRS papers in time, see if you can send them your W2 that shows your 2015 income and your dad’s tax return copy for now. Then provide the required items asap.
