wow, i improved exactly 11 pts btwn frosh and soph year too. but i prepared. XD

i guess everyone has a limit as to how high they can go, so the key is to find that place and nail it.

SHAMELESS PLUG ALERT

princeton review helped me improve ALOT... if u have the time and the money i recommend it

when i took the psat, (sophmore) they graded us like how they would grade the new sat (out of 2400). i got a 1900 out of 2400 which would be around a 1260 out of 1600.

my parents are completely freaking out ( may i point out that this leaves me no time to freak out at my score b/c i'm too freaked out about my parents freaking out - very unfair! lol! )

therefore, i'm counting on my score to improve. btw, thanks for the tip about the princeton review, ilovetocamp! i didn't study for this one, so my score is bound to improve if i do study, right...?

anyway... Happy V-day folks!!!

desi_chik,

O yeah, fer shure ur score will improve, if one thing i do suggest, is that you put a strong basis on vocab. it helps alot

very true. i hadn't even seen or heard some of the words they put on there.
practice makes perfect, i guess. sighs loudly and proceeds to get out vocab list lol!

if you're already ok at math however, pr math will bore you to tears. just a heads up. haha and they have organization issues with the classrooms....

lol! i'm sure they do. actually, my scores for english and math were pretty balanced so i get the added fun of working at both. yay!

... in the math section, i think that it's the practice that mostly helps, not the methods

deus, did they teach you that GIST crap? where u find the General Idea, Structure, and Tone?

LoL! I never do that I tend to score higher thanks to not following it. Ironic.

I'm doin my refresher course on the weekends, and we're crammed into some small ass room where we gotta sit on stools for 3 hrs = sore ass

I didnt improve too much from sophomore to junior - 1 pt.

But it was 232-233 so im happy :)

LOL, we're doing it at a community college where the desks are approximately .9834 in^2. i ignore gist as well and would like nothing better to disembowel joe bloggs.

I would think that anything over 190 is respectable and in the ballpark for the Ivies. 200 is even better. My son was at 226 as a 10th grader and I would expect him to be National Merit down the road since he's a good test-taker.

As well, you'll know by the brochures that will come in the mail.

Do the brochures come only if the school is considering to maybe give you chance? Because my score was low (174) and I still got good schools like Cornell and Rice.

heh, well it's better than mine, we gotta sit in some tiny ass room on stools, and well, that puts a strain on ur backside...

r u currently taking the refresher course?

nah, i'm taking the two month course right before the SAT's. what's hilarious though is that my scores have been in steady decline as PR stretches out. lol, i like my first diagnostic score the best.

Let's put it this way--after my daughter, we just put a storage bin by the front door for all the brochures for my son. My d rec'd. one a week from one school, even after she had said "not interested" -- they finally stopped in late December.

I have a couple of theories on college marketing: 1) Schools like to increase their application pools for the US News & WR ratings; and 2) It is flattering for a kid to hear from the great schools; thus, sometimes calling attention to themselves when otherwise they might have been dismissed. Some kids (and parents) like to go around saying "I heard from so-and-so" -- gets old when you know that some send to all viable candidates.

heh, u serious?

the great thing about me is that my test scores are ALWAYS higher than my rpactice ones... must be some kind of adrenaline thing, where i finally awake from my "apathetic" slumbber

same here! on the practice PSAT's i only improved about 2 or 3 points from soph year, but on the real thing i improved 11. haha well i think we've found out what motivates you... now you just need to constantly be in a situation where what you're doing is timed and will determine your future, lol.

[quote] As well, you'll know by the brochures that will come in the mail.

very true, but don't base your entire estimate of what you got before actually receiving the scores purely on these pamphlets, because

if you live on the west coast, it'll take a while for the pamphlets to reach you, maybe even after you get your scores

the type of schools you get brochures from isn't neccessarily indicative of your score either, so don't jump to conclusions

slaps forehead ur a genius!

well it looks like all of my schoolwork fits that criteria now...

What's the average score a National Merit Finalist, and does anyone know what score qualifies you for the National Hispanic Scholarship? I gota 176 index and 83% :( so I need to know how many points to bring it up to qualify. Darn math section!!!

SmartMexicanGirl, you probably need something in the 190s.

On a side note, I'm kinda nervous because one of my friends just took the PSATs this year as a junior and he DROPPED 20 points, he went from a 220 to a 200 flat. That would suck so much :(, from basically Finalist to Commended.
