PSAT Scores Class of 2012

My Junior did better last year (216) than this year (211). Nevada’s NMS cut-off scores are not as stable as other states. Last 5 years: 205, 208, 206, 202, 208. Anyone have ideas if this year will go up or down in Nevada?

^Hmmmm… Nevada’s scores seem to be more volatile than most states, but I can’t imagine it going up more than a few points, and it’s never risen past 208 from what I can see. Just an observation… Congrats on your Junior’s score! :)

Thanks. You, too, flashpoint. We are living “on the edge” and just have to wait. I heard that by around April, people are able to predict NMS cut-offs within each state. Not sure how they do that.

Thanks, flashpoint. Try to relax, it’s definitely not worth worrying about for the next 9 months hahaha. I studied pretty hard for this, and I’m happy with the way it turned out. I took the PSAT my sophomore year cold and got a 202, so the school put myself and several other high-scoring kids in a special class twice a week, with the goal of producing more NMS Finalists/Commended students. I’m really happy about the results. Well done on your for scoring so well cold. And I definitely agree, the kids on CC seem to be the pick of the litter. Almost enough to make me nervous sometimes… almost ;)

^Ahhh… I see. My school started up in 2006 and has had one Finalist who got an NM scholarship, and one Semifinalist, although they were in the graduating class of 2010. So if I make the cut, I’d be only the third student to even advance this far. There were a few people who I thought would make the cut, but out of everyone I talked to, nobody else has had a score above 199 this year.

You got a really good score last year. I got a 189, so I thought that it was useless to try and improve to the NMS cutoff. And I took a practice PSAT and scored a 195, so I thought my chances were shot. Turns out that they’re not completely. Ugh. But, you’re right; it’s useless to worry.

I seem pretty mediocre compared to most people on this board (Only one AP test under my belt so far, with two more coming up this year, good but not elite test scores, good grades but only fair extracurriculars, etc., and I’ve never taken the SAT/ACT. Although I did skip 9th grade, so I guess that counts for something.)

All of us still scored within the top 1% of everyone taking the test (or is it the top 3% for Commended?) For now, let’s just focus on enjoying the break from school!

@Renomamma: I’m not sure just how people would be able to predict the cutoffs in April, seeing as how that’s only when you get the letters that tell you if you scored high enough to even be Commended. But if you get any wind of it, make sure to tell all of us!

I got 210 and I’m living in Idaho…
The cutoffs from previous 4 years are…
204(2008), 208(2009), 209(2010), 208(2011), ???(2012)

Did I make it (whats the probability that I make it) ??? (bear in mind ID isn’t like the non-populous Alaska, which has a very fluctuating curve) (scared about the 4+ jump in 2008 and 2009)…
Also 210 is 98th percentile but Idaho’s 99th percentile has always been lower than the national one.

HELP? I NEED WORDS OF COMFORT OR SOMETHING TO GET MY MIND OFF OF THIS!!!

I am sure you’ll be fine. The curve usually moves by one or two points. My state has had the same curve for three years!

Can someone clarify for me? What does “cold” mean, in regards to these tests? Does it mean not studying? And if so, is a 215 “cold” good (in AZ)?

Previously in my school we’ve only had 3 semi-finalists (this is our 4th year of having a Junior class at my school). The class of 2011 had no one, but the class of 2010 had 3. Apparently I’m the only hopeful for my school this year.

does anyone know if we can find out our psat scores if we find call collegeboard. I asked my GC she told me to ask my assistant principal. I went to him he told me that the my GC should have received my test. Then, he called collegeboard and told them that “a student had lost her scores” but in reality my school didn’t even gave me my scores back. Has anyone called collegeboard to learn more about their scores?

does anyone know if collegeboard will be open this week?

How do they even know that the top 96 or 97% for commended will be 50k people? Is the 50k just an estimate?

Yes, America 2011, your scores should be on the college board website.

Congrats, Lolar! 215 “cold” (without studying) is great and sounds like a qualifying score for AZ!

yes, I know that, but I do not have an access code.

Did anyone in this forum get their scores by just calling collegeboard?

We don’t need the access code any more (we did last week). They are up there now without it. Maybe that isn’t the case for you, America?

Thanks Renomamma! : )

I can’t decide whether or not I should study for the SAT. Standardized testing comes easily to me, so I dunno. A few of my friends’ parents went all intense for this test and made them study for hours every night, and they both scored in the 180’s.

Lolar- I have heard from some very experienced people that studying only helps a little…especially if you are bright and do well at standardized testing. Being familiar with the format is important and, of course, reviewing math concepts if it has been a while. My son went in “cold” for PSAT and got 216 and then studied this year and got a 211. So, who knows if studying helps. I would suggest just taking a few practice tests. The SAT is long, but most of the time, you can retake it if you don’t like your score.

NMSF, here I come (California)!

Lolar, study for the SAT. A 215 is good but doesn’t mean you shouldn’t study. If anything, you should study more to get that high SAT.

You should see my school. We have 16+ semis this year and we’re not even considered one of the best schools in CA.
