Is it true that if you make the state cutoff on the PSAT as a junior that they send you a letter before you receive your scores? IF you don't get a mail, does this means that you did not make it?

Did this happen to anyone you know?

I don't know about that. State cutoffs vary from year to year, so colleges can't be totally sure if you made it or not.

Yeah I know someone who received a letter, but I'm not sure what is was for exactly, but he did score high as a sophmore (232). He's now a Junior but we have yet to receive our scores in school.

So I'm wondering if any current seniors who have taken the PSAT know anything about this.

Nope. Not true.

Not true. Commended and SF's receive notification direct from their schools, as I did.

How about letters from colleges? Does it mean you've made the cut if you get losts of mail from colleges this week?

nope. colleges send stuff to a lot of people based on a RANGE of scores. if a college sends you stuff it just means you're within a certain range of scores

Has anyone gotten lots of mail this week. If so, then from what colleges?

well a couple here and there from columbia and washington university in st. louis. some jhu and other stuff

"Is it true that if you make the state cutoff on the PSAT as a junior that they send you a letter before you receive your scores? IF you don't get a mail, does this means that you did not make it"

It says in the letter that it goes to the top 50,000 scorers in the country. 16,000 get Semifinalist and the other 34,000 are commended students.

I made state cut off last year when I took the psat, I did not receive anything. When you get your psat scores, I dont even think they have determined a cutoff for semi-finalist.

mr_sanguine, did you agree to participate in the college search service thingy?

A friend's daughter scored 240 on last year's PSAT. She was told by her principal, a week before the scores were released to the other students at her high school.

Does this mean that if I haven't gotten any mail this week, the game's not over yet?

I got notified by a teacher at my school who gave me all the stuff needed to apply. I now get tons of mail from colleges that usually go something like this 'Congratulations on becoming a semi finalist in the national merit scholarship competition. We want you to know that we want top students like you so we're willing to offer $XXXXXX guranteed scholarship if we're listed as your first choice school and you apply and get accepted...' It's really quite nice actually.

I scored a 232 last year as a sophomore. College mail started coming in only after I got my score back.

bravo, unfortunately, i need to wait until january to see if i even have a chance of being a semifinalist :(

I got a letter several weeks ago from Long Island University saying congratulations on your performance on the PSAT, and "Because of your outstanding score, you have been considered for the National Merit Scholarhip program....." Any ideas on what this is implying?

gasp <sarcasm>explain ctgirl</sarcasm>

My brother was a semi-finalist last year and though he did get a lot of mail from colleges he didn't get anything special.

So, no, if you don't get anything in the mail before the scores are released it doesn't mean you aren't in the running.
