psycho roommate

my roommate is insistent that the door to our apartment is always locked, even if someone is home. i think it’s ridiculous, because no one can get in the building without a student ID, or are a guest of a resident, and we have 24 security. it’s super annoying to have to take my keys with me every single time i leave my apartment it’s gotten to the point that we’re in a lock feud, where she is always locking the door and i am always unlocking it. any advice on how to deal with that?

I don’t think your roommate is being “psycho” or unreasonable. She’s being appropriately cautious.

Lock the doors. She feels safer with it locked. You aren’t pushing for it to be left unlocked because you would feel safer, but for convenience.

Sorry, I don’t think keeping the door locked is too much to ask, just learn to keep your keys with you.

I’m sitting in my apartment now (in a supposedly “secure” building now, and the door is locked). You can just carry your keys. I’ve had break-ins when I was home.

Doesn’t qualify for “psycho” status – carry your keys.

Many dorm room and apartment doors lock automatically. My daughter’s did even if she went to the bathroom. That was okay because she needed her electronic key to get into the bathroom too.

It’s the way of the world. Lock the door.

I vote to carry your keys. A lot of dorm doors lock automatically as they close. Meaning most students need their keys all the time Unfortunately, this is not your case so just let it go. She isn’t be unreasonable.

Add me to the locks vote.

We aren’t usually unanimous.

So it looks like you should lock the door or college confidential is filled entirely with psychos. Though now that you mention it…

Lock the door. A good friend of mine’s daughter’s dorm apartment was entered by a male student resident of same dorm apartment, while she and roommate were sleeping. They got lazy about the door. They were in a secure building. This was their second year and no issues so far. All interior doors from hall. Thankfully, her screaming and posturing scared him away (broke through window) when she awoke with him standing over her.
He was later caught and arrested. His cell phone had a video of him assulting another female student.
He was an international student and once bailed from jail by his father, they tried to run. Got caught in a neighboring state hiding out, so hopefully will have a longer sentence. Had he been able to get back to his home country, no telling if he would have been ever held accountable. Just not worth it for convenience.

I lock my house door when I’m home, esp alone. Earlier this year, a man murdered his brother, hijacjed a car, wrecked it on a curve 3streets away from my house, and went door to door, trying to get in a house. Police shot and killed him, thankfully, before he found an unlocked door.

There has been a bunch of thefts at my son’s college. The thief enters unlocked doors when the resident is visiting in the building or in the bathroom. The thief has to be a student. He or she is only stealing in one dormitory building and it requires a key card to enter. Are you prepared to give away all your cash, credit cards and computer? It takes seconds to steal from an unlocked room.

Better safe than sorry. Lock it!

Twice so far this semester drunk guys have barged into my daughter’s dorm room and scared her to death. She is lucky that they were harmless. Keep your door locked. Your roommate is correct.

It’s a good idea to lock it. And fwiw, if you lock it when nobody is there or when you are sleeping, just being in the habit will ensure that 1. It’s always locked when you want it to be and 2. You always take your keys with you when you leave and don’t inadvertently lock yourself out.

Reasonable, un psycho habit.

From past news reports, I know there was a Peeing Tom in our state flag college town terrorizing female students in their sleep by checking in with unlock doors for a decade. And there was also a college girl killed by her roommate’s boy friend who was not a college student but pretended to be, and this event happened in the dormitory building of a top 15 university which is also in our state. Your roommate is actually having more sense than you. Sorry to tell you about that.

“Peeing Tom”
That’s new!

Peeping Tom. My bad.

She never returned.
