My child attends a very competitve high school on the East Coast which routinely places kids in HYPS, other Ivy League schools and top public schools like UVA, U Mich and UNC - Chapel Hill. However the school has had little success with the UC system (Cal and UCLA) -- I am curious as to why this is the case. Any thoughts?

maybe not very many people apply for the UC's to begin with. or maybe most of the top students do not think of applying to the UC's, so you end up with the not-as-strong students applying to them. That can be hard for competitive out-of-state schools like the UC's.

Thanks for the reply, DeantheMachn. That is probably what is happening.

That's part of the answer. UCs have traditionally been hostile to students applying out-of-state. It's commonly known that OOS students need higher GPA and SAT to get in than Californian residents. Also, since UCs don't practice AA the top students who are minorities OOS may get into Ivies and not a top UC. I've heard of students getting into Stanford or Princeton but rejected from Berkeley.
