<p>I've been accepted already, and if I receive an AES award, I should receive notification approximately one to three weeks by now. (It's been three since I got accepted.)</p>
<p>However, I'm very confused about the GPAs that are listed on the scholarship page: the highest one is a 5.187! Obviously they aren't using a standard GPA or even a regular weighted one, since those cap off at 5.0 if one were to take all AP/honors courses all four years of high school...</p>
<p>I wouldn’t worry about the GPA part. They probably should have reported the average unweighted GPA. I guess most of the people they give AES awards to go to schools that have really weird GPA scales. The SAT scores (which I assume are on a 1600 scale) aren’t very high compared to how impossibly high we think the GPAs are.</p>
<p>The admissions people will probably compare our GPA to our class rank, which gives a better comparison than if they compared it to the mean GPA for the awards.</p>
<p>Thanks for the reply! Yes, I was confused about how the SAT scores compare as well, and I do wish that they had reported the GPAs on a standard unweighted scale. (Or at least on a 5-point scale, if they felt they really needed to weight the GPAs!)
I do recall reading in one member’s post that some Texas high schools weight honors/AP courses to a 6, not a 5, so perhaps UT is using that scale for their AES awards?</p>
<p>In case anyone else is waiting on the AES notification, UTD has updated their AES page and wrote “The AES review and award process for freshmen who have been admitted for Fall 2012 will begin in December 2011. If you have already been admitted for Fall 2012 and qualify for an AES award, you will be notified by the Office of Undergraduate Education by mail in December.” Also, they modified the awards from last year’s by removing the housing part and adding $1k stipend instead of the housing, which should be exciting for people who weren’t going to use the housing part anyways. December is tomorrow so the wait is almost over.</p>

<p>Scholarship: Honors
SAT: 1500 (1600 scale), 2140 (2400 scale)
ACT: 35
Class rank: 2 out of 493
GPA (weighted): 4.580</p>
<p>sdjdorlo, you son will still be considered for AES scholarships. They’re separate. What happens is your son will get the AES scholarship in the mail soon. Then your son interviews for Mcdermott if he is invited to finalist weekend. If your son ends up not getting mcdermott, your son will still have the aes scholarship.</p>

<p>Sbjdorlo. My son received a letter today. I actually called late last week and the AES office said that they were sending another batch at the end of last week. So maybe you’ll hear soon. We are in Dallas. BTW, I’m doing the happy dance–he received the Honors scholarship. :-)</p>

Now, he’ll wait to see if he’s a McDermott finalist.</p>

<p>Thank you! Congrats to both of you, too! And yes, UTD is indeed very generous and I’m really happy for that. Today I checked the AES page again, and they have updated it and posted the current averages of SAT scores of people who received each AES award. It seems that they have gone up significantly. I’m glad they didn’t post the average GPAs (but they might do it later), because that was kind of confusing.</p>
<p>My son also has applied for McDermott and is a semi-finalist. We went to Scholar’s Day up at UTD a few weeks ago. They had a special reception for those interested in the McDermott Scholarship. Some had already been named semi-finalists and some were being recruited. There were probably about 50-100 people there and they said they will get a lot of applications for the 20 spots. They also explained the process which is pretty extensive. The program sounds fantastic!</p>

<p>Are you in the area, heavenlyhostess? I don’t think we knew about Scholars Day but we’re in So. Cal. My son would travel to UTD only if he’s a finalist for the McDermott.</p>
<p>Yes. We are in Dallas. So that’s why we knew about it. Have you been able to visit UTD? We have been impressed with both the academics and the opportunities available. I know it’s not Harvard. But that was not our goal and UTD is really trying to become as they said, " The MIT of the South." They are definitely an emerging univeristy. </p>
<p>On another note…You should see the dorms. They are super nice compared to other universities in Texas. I’m an Aggie so I’ve lived in some of the dorms at Texas A&M. They were nice 20+ years ago. But UTDs are like mini-small apartments! Each student has their own room that locks. Three rooms open up into a small living area and bathroom. </p>
