I was selected for the full B/K scholarship from Maryland and just a couple days ago, the financial aid status showed up online. It seems like they offered a loan to cover the remaining $3000 that covers the remaining cost after the $19000 B/K scholarship. I was under the impressions the scholarship was full. Does anybody know anything about this? I will call the Banneker/Key and Financial Aid offices on Monday, but does anyone know what the deal is?

Did the send you a letter? What does it say it covers. I think maybe there are some that don’t include R&B. Are you instate?

@cyborg, congrats. The B/K covers tuition, fees, a book stipend, R&b AND your choice of iPod or iPhone. It is NOT full COA. The COA includes personal expenses, travel, etc. If you need extra money for these personal expenses, you can either take the loan offered or if you have outside scholarship (such as the MDS award for IS students) then they can be added to your award up to the limit of full COA.

Here is the 2010-11 Banneker/Key budget from the UMD website:
In-State Out-State
Tuition $6,763.00 $23,178.00
Mandatory Fees $1,652.44* $1,652.44*
Room/Telecom $5,714.00 $5,714.00
Board $3,885.00 $3,885.00
Books $1,076.00 $1,076.00
Total $19,090.44** $35,505.44**

It seems pretty “full” to me. I believe what’s “left out” is personal expenses and transportation.

Okay now I understand. Thank you everyone for the clarification. I have already received one and am expecting maybe one or two more merit scholarships from outside organizations, so I will probably turn down the loan and use the money in scholarships for the personal expenses and such. Thanks again!
