Question for students from China

Hey guys.

Veteran of the boards here. Helped enormously in guiding me through the application process back in high school - over 4 years ago!

I have a question for students from China applying to top universities in the US. Generally, where do students of your caliber applying to top-ranked US universities seek out help? (Aside from these forums, of course.)

I have heard that the use of agents in China in quite widespread, and that some universities have agreements with Chinese agents guaranteeing admissions for their clients who meet certain requirements. Of course, the top tier schools don't have such agreements, so where do students turn?

The reason I'm asking is because I'm investigating the feasibility of a venture that would connect students/graduates of top universities in the US to their peers in China to guide them through all aspects of the application process, and I'm wondering whether the demand for such a service exists or not.

sure the service is in dire need of.
generally most Chinese applicants pay a fortune to workshops and get helps there. also a small amount of students DIY.

and the guaranteeing admissions are just for some lazy but well-to-do students. the schools are all ranked between 50-100. not good for ordinary students.

and those who hope get into top ones, either pay a fortune to some experienced and famous workshops to help them with writing essays(like me), or have relatives in US who can be of great help.
other students having no alternatives have to get into a bad school and transfer to better ones when they come to US.
so you see how your service is needed.

I was wondering why they don’t administer the SAT in China? How do these thousands of Chinese students take the test or they don’t? Or do they go abroad only to take a dumb test?

you got it! they go abroad just to take a dumb damned test. mostly they go to singapore, japan, south korea etc. some even to australia and new zealand.
hoho the Chinese government are so cunning!it is rumored that if SAT is administered in China all smart students will study abroad, not in China.you see all Chinese colleges are terribly bad except really a few.

Oh, I see. To Australia for a test? I think the Chinese government has a good motive though. As it happens, the best students in our country go study abroad too.

the SAT’s are administered in Hong Kong for Chinese students.

yea, most usually go to Hong Kong. I live in Beijing and had to fly out to HK thrice in 6 months. Just for the bloody test.

Wouldn’t you be hosed on every section but Math?

I wonder that too.

We have to go to HK to take the SAT.

then why is it that Mainland Chinese students don’t have to fly overseas to take TOEFL? i think Collegeboard is just afraid of rampant cheating.

Collegeboard actually wants to administer the SAT here in China. However, the Chinese government doesnt allow them.

khan91 was absolutely right. about years ago(i am really not sure) it was said that SAT was administered in mainland China but it was prohibited soon.now only international school students can take SATs in mainland China.

That’s so gay… yeah come to Hong Kong and take the test. But be sure to sign up early cus spaces fill up really fast.

You’re exempt from the SATs if you’re from China, but most people take it anyway.

That’s the problem.

Also, any such service would be in great demand, but only if you can pull off the first few students you help. It’s getting better now, though. Before it was HYPS or QingHua/Beijing. Now people are aiming for lower schools as well.

Also also schools in China aren’t worse; they’re just poor.

erm, at very few places you’re exempted. Out of around 12 odd places i applied to, only 1 gave that exemption and all others explicitly stated that they wanted me to take the SAT.

I am a chinese guy living in Australia. I don’t think many chinese students come here to take SAT, coz nearly all the tests for the US university applications such as TOEFL, SAT, GRE, etc. are quite easy to register. Not so many people here take them. While another English test IELTS is extremely difficult to reserve. It’s always quite full. That’s because the English requirement of migration becomes higher and higher, and applicants have to take it over and over again to meet the requirement.

I have heard of that many students in the mainland uses GRE to substitute SAT. and yet get pretty solid score…

if you are really keen on starting a business venture of this nature, i suggest you start in some moderately unknown cities first. hot spots like Beijing and Shanghai are practically flooded with hordes of uni application agencies so you just cant compete.

there are ton of sat prep class in china especially with New Oriental where the teachers take the SAT and dig out all the dirt and spit it back to the kids. very effective. i took the class even thou i’m not an international student but it added about 300 more points to my sat score.

and actually, the chinese student are way better at grammar than the american kids here and they can pwn the writing section. it’s the reading and the essay that is most difficult for them.

and the ones i met while i was in china, their vocab are not bad either.

dude if u want an intern, aim at New Oriental, they will definitely be impressed by your SATs and such. You’ll be paid handsomely there, regardless what you do. Or u can just start an agency on your own.
I heard that Princetown Review is doing some coaching for Chinese high schoolers in Beijing or Shanghai, so contacting them may be a good way to start.
The Chinese typically use this website to recruit: [url=http://www.zhaopin.com]
