Question for the girls

I'm reading an older book, and there are a few scenes in it that can best be described as a guy using "pick up lines." Looking at it in respect to today's world, some of them are quite funny, so I started to wonder what reaction girls nowadays would have to a guy approaching them with such lines.

Let's start it like this, in today's setting. College guy approaches between classes:

Guy: Hi, how are you? I'm Nate. What is your name? holds hand out
Girl: Hi... i'm Kate. shakes hand
Guy: Ah, Kate, a lovely name for a lovely lady.
Girl: ...
Guy: I must say, I really like your outfit - it looks very sexy on you.
Girl: ...
Guy: Although a beautiful girl like yourself would make just about anything look great.
Girl: um, Thanks...
Guy: Not a problem - just being in the presence of such beauty is more than a man could ask for.
Girl: ...

Still with me with a straight face? Great. What would be your reaction as a modern girl in this awkward situation? Would you be weirded out, fall over laughing, blush, be flattered, be turned off/on, flirt, giggle, be shy, be attracted to the guy, or just think "how cheesy can you possibly get?"

weirded out if the guy was sketch looking (looks like a perv), but flattered if it was a normal guy although still kinda weird as to like, "Um okay where did all this come from?"

uh, yeah...still a little weird even if the guy seems ok. "A lovely name for a lovely lady" sort of tips the scales on cheesiness. He'd have to be pretty charming to work that one.

There's a couple guys I know who could probably pull it off (including my ex) but you would have to be REALLY suave to do it.

...no...just no...

id be creeped out.. even if the guy was totally normal looking. not because of the nature of the compliments but the way he says them. i would say uhhh thanks, smile, then walk away laughing to whoever was near me

just.....weird

ick

never come on to people..it's ALWAYS creepy

I would be flattered, but that's just laying it on too thick. I'd still smile, but I would feel uncomfortable.

Such lines may not work in a casual college setting.

their response will be highly dependent on non-verbal cues such as eye contact, body language, what you're wearing, and your attractiveness, not the first words out of your mouth.

Unless you're saying utterly ridiculous things, as in that dialog, in which case they will probably just laugh at you no matter what you look like. If you want to use lines like "a lovely name for a lovely lady," you might as well find a way to warp yourself back to the Victorian era.

It can be quite enjoyable for both parties if done correctly and in the proper situation. Unless you find the whole concept of sexually-motivated behavior creepy, in which case you probably don't understand the human species too well and are probably creepier than people who enjoy simple flirting :-) How do you think people get together at parties/bars?

are you serious? Its not okay to be that much of a creeper!

I'd wonder what his ulterior motive is.

Obviously. But that doesn't mean all come-ons are creepy, either.

Haha, funny you mention that, because that's what era the book is in.

girls, how might you take this gem of a pick up line: I like my women the same way I like my coffee... ground up and in the freezer. It might be laying it on a bit too thick , but would a girl think your a total creeper if you said it?

No, I think this is a good line. Smooth and to the point. It must really turn girls on because they seem to want to touch you after you say it. Seriously, my friend tried it once and this girl swiftly caressed him with her palm right across his face. She must have really loved the line because the touch left a red, painful mark on my friend's face.

Exactly, there is usually a high sucess rate, but at times these suave quips can be misunderstood or taken completely out of context. Personally, I've used this one: "What's the difference between me and the Titanic? ... Only a thousand girls went down on the Titanic." The girl quickly proceeded to caress my nether region, albeit with her shoe.

Haha, the other day:
Guy: Hey, you dropped your smile
Me: so confused
Guy: It just looks better with your outfit.
Me: ... weirdo. walks away

Pick up lines are pretty much always creepy, I think.

that seemed like the equivalent to this:
Guy: Hi, how are you? I'm Nate. What is your name? holds hand out
Girl: Hi... i'm Kate. shakes hand
Guy: do you mind if i hit on you?
