Hey
I am kind of in a dilemma here because i’m quite the procrastinator
I just realized on the Drexel website that the deadline for Westphal is feb 1 and all this time i’ve been thinking everything is due March 1 as i’ve seen on common app and the e-mails they sent me. I’ve been trying to perfect my westphal essay for music industry all throughout and it’s killing me that I’m late! Do you think they’ll understand if I tell them? I am thinking of just putting General Humanities instead and then trying to apply to music industry if I get in even though I heard it’s really selective and the spots may already be full by now. Do you think I would have to apply again to get in to Wesphal if I get accepted and enroll as something else? maybe for sophomore year? Or am i basically screwed either way?

CommonIntuition - There are general education requirements such as English and Math classes. Not sure what those are for Psychology but I know those must be taken for Music Industry. I graduated HS with my AA degree so I got college credit for those courses already and don’t have to retake them so I don’t know a lot about the general education classes, sorry. I know that if you go to your major’s page on Drexel’s website it usually has the course of study with all the classes that you are required to take. Also not too sure about the Penn question because they don’t offer Music Industry courses so I’m not sure about any crossover. Have you searched this on the Drexel website? Or google?

Liquidicefreeze - I don’t think you have to deny their admission, but if so I guess the best way to do it would be to call the admissions office.

ihopeillgetin - So sorry that happened! I definitely don’t want to get your hopes down but it seems that Westphal is fairly strict about deadlines. I would call them as soon as you can to talk to them about it (their offices will reopen from the weekend on Monday, probably at 8AM). If you put general humanities and then try to switch into Music Industry that is almost impossible because you would be on the waiting list behind all the incoming freshman next year and they usually fill up all spots before even getting through all the incoming freshman. If Music Industry is really what you want to do I’d suggest continuing to try to get in. Make phone calls, be persistent, show that you are dedicated. Good luck.

Hi my i just got admitted into drexel nd d honors college, with a deans scholarship… only problem is though, i am an international student (from Nigeria) and i know drexel doesnt offer full scholarships and so i appealed my scholarship to see how much more i can get, i just wanted to know, in the invent that i do come to drexel (which i really want to), my dad says he’ll pay but its a big investment… 1st of all, do you think its totally worth it and also, i am enrolling in the 5-year, 3 Co-op option, do you think that when i start my Co-op i’ll be able to make enough money to contribute to my fees, say about 5000??/

And also, i am an outgoing person, who wants to make new friends of different races (which is one of the reasons i am leaving my country in the first place), do you think, that’ll will be a problem(making new friends)??

Hi halima1994 - If you have the chance to visit Drexel I think that’d be really great for you. Drexel is a really good school (what are you majoring in?) I love it here. I love it because it’s in a big city, great social life, amazing people, and it’s a REALLY good school for what I’m doing. Definitely make sure it is a good school for what YOU want to do and that it fits you.

The co-op here is such a great thing because it gives you real world experience before you have to truly enter the job market. How much money you make in a co-op definitely depends on your major. I believe there was a paper somewhere in the financial aid package (at least last year) that stated about how much to expect for a co-op in different majors. Art majors like mine (Music Industry) usually have unpaid or very low paid co-ops. Others can make a lot of money in their co-ops, it really depends.

I know a lot of international students who love it here. I haven’t had problems making friends here. I am from far away too (not as far as you but far compared to a lot of the people who are mostly from this area). You will meet very diverse people here, I love it. Hope this helped, good luck!

Callmehaley, my younger daughter was accepted and she is very excited about Drexel. Can you please give us some insight about how the ratio of students who commute versus students that live on campus? My daughter would live on campus and we want to know if she will enjoy the typical college experience (activities, friends, studying, social life, etc)? Do students stay on campus for 4 years? Is housing guaranteed? Can you comment on the attrition rate? Are a high pctg of students transferring out? If so, why? I’m just a nervous dad…

Hi, I got accepted to LeBow College with the Dean’s scholarship. I hope you can answer my questions before I submit the Enrollment Form.

“The scholarships are renewed each year that the student maintains a 3.0 GPA”. This is from the website. It means the scholarship depends ONLY on GPA, right? I’m from Vietnam, so I am not sure 3.0 is easy to get. If I get more than 3.0 GPA, do they offer me more amount of scholarship than what I received the previous year?

Is there a big difference in the cost of different campuses? Which one is the cheapest? It’s impossible for me to visit the campus. I will appreciate very much if you can suggest reliable sources of photos or videos about the campuses. Or can you suggest a campus that suits me? I’m quite talkative. I don’t mind sharing room with students from different races, countries or interests. However, I am not really comfortable with a crowded and noisy environment that can distract my study.

Thank you very much!!!

@callmehaley! Thanks a lot! that was helpful, i am going to be majoring in engineering and i know drexel is a great engineering school!!! Although, i would love to visit, but getting a visa would be very stressful, so basically i just have to depend on pictures and firsthand experience from students!!! I love that the people are friendly and i think i might just fit in right, so i am excited about that too! I was also wonder though… what do you think a good estimate for spending money would be (monthly)?? so i can prepare properly before i head to school!

GWUDad - Don’t worry, no need to be nervous! I find that most students live on campus (You are required to your first year unless you are a commuter). I know only one commuter so I don’t think this should be any problem for your daughter. Not all students stay on campus for four years. I believe that housing is guaranteed as a freshman and a sophomore but not guaranteed after that. I will be a sophomore next year and I will be living in University Crossing (UCross), which is an apartment building on campus. Drexel leases out some of these apartments through housing but mostly it is a non-drexel owned apartment complex (a lot cheaper also by going through them and not through Drexel). I’m sorry I don’t know anything about the attrition rate, that information might be available online through goodle but I’m not sure. I know of a few people who are considering transferring out but one of them has just specifically said that she doesn’t want to do the amount of required work for our major. I think that most people who come here truly like Drexel. And yes, she will definitely get the typical college experience living on campus her first year, everything in the dorms is very social!

claml19932 - Scholarships usually just depend on GPA unless it is a music, sports, etc. scholarship. However it also depends on conduct, for example if you are caught drinking in the dorm, cheating on a test, etc. Those things can put you on probation which could affect your scholarship. Keep your grades up and stay out of trouble and your scholarship should be fine. I don’t think Drexel increases scholarship, if they do it is a small percentage I think. I assume by the different campuses you are talking about Queen Lane, Center City, and Main Campus (University City). If you are an incoming freshman you are required to live in the dorms which are all in University City Main Campus. If you have facebook there are many Drexel groups and pages that you can look at for pictures, also try googling some things! Unfortunately at times any dorm will be loud, that’s the downside to living with a bunch of people, but there is always the library and other places to do hw and study if for some reason you can’t get it done in your room/lounge!

halima1994 - Good! Honestly spending money depends entirely on YOU. Could be $10/month, could be $500. You will have a meal plan so you won’t need to spend any money on food unless you decide to buy groceries or go out to eat (inevitably you will decide to go out to eat at some point so base food money off of how often you think you will be doing that). There’s also travel and extras, things like taking the subway or taxi to center city or going to the zoo or a movie, etc. etc. Again these things are based off of how often you plan on doing that. Lastly there’s things like clothes and books which are a necessity. Books should be estimated within your tuition. Sorry I can’t be more help on spending money!

Good luck everyone.

Hello. I’m an international student and I will apply Drexel next year. So far I have just taken the SAT and I got 2070 (CR 600, M 740, W 730). My biggest concern is about the financial aid, because my family can only contribute about $10000 - $15000/year. Do you think I have any chance of having my full-need met? I’m really nervous as I don’t have many ECs or talents. I’m sorry if my question sounds silly, but I just find it so hard to find as much information for international students as I need. Thank you so much.

@heathernguyen, no, as an international student, they will definitely not meet your full need. International students are eligible only for merit-based aid, with a maximum of $26K per year. With a cost of attendance of $46K/year over 5 years or $53K/year over 4 years, your family will have to come up with a minimum of $20K/year (and add to that what it will cost you to travel there). And I don’t think your current stats are sufficient for the maximum scholarship. My S was offered $21K with a SAT of 2070 and an ACT of 35 (which is stronger than that SAT). So you’re probably looking at needing to pay closer to $25K - $30K per year.

Does anyone know how competitive the Drexel architecture program is?

i was wondering how strict drexel was? more specifically, how easy is it to have overnight guests?

We were on a tour there last week and they said that a guest could stay 3 nights with permission, and always had to be with the person who lived in the dorm, while in the dorm. I think I got that right! They did not say if only girls could stay on a girl floor, and only guys on a guy floor.

I don’t know how much you can help me but I’ll be going to Drexel in the fall for Business Admin and I was really excited until my brother mentioned a friend of his the was really smart and went there. He was recommended by Drexel to go to MONCO because he wasn’t doing good at all. Am I going to have to worry about doing horrible? I am kind of freaking out now.

I was just accepted into the graphic design program at Antoinette Westphal college of Media arts and Design. However, my community college did not offer certain classes so I have to start as a non-matriculated student in about 3 weeks. I am a bit older then most students but I have never moved away from home (by this I mean out of the state of Florida). Since things are happening so quickly, can someone please give me some insight on housing? How quick is Drexel on paying out your loans to you after they have taken the tuition part? Is there any housing left at this time and are there any chances for free housing? I ask about free housing because I feel that I am at an age that I could possibly be an RA. Also, since its such a short amount of time I am afraid that I will not be able to find a sublet that I can afford. I figured the dorm was a safer route because the loan would be paid directly to them and then I could deal with fall housing later. I am doing this all on my own with loans, financial aid and no help so I am a bit stressed out. I hope that I am making the right decision to just pick up everything and move. If anyone can give me some insight I would greatly appreciate it. I really want to make this work.

You can have overnight guests for 3 nights in a row. It does not matter if they are guys or girls.

littleflower - I am not a business or business admin major so I don’t know anything about then specifically. I have heard, and I don’t mean this to be rude or to discourage you from going, that at times the business major at Drexel is very easy. That’s not to say people can’t do badly in it, I know a guy on my floor who was doing very poorly in some of his classes. You still need to pay attention and can’t slack off, that is what college is about. I am sure you’ll do fine here if you keep up with your work :)

L8Blmr - i completely understand. I just moved to Drexel from Florida in the fall (and had lived in FL my whole life). It is very scary, but don’t be stressed. My move was hard at first but very rewarding, I love Philadelphia. I consider it my second home for sure. I’'m in Westphal as well and all of the programs here are amazing. As far as housing still being available that’s really something you need to contact them about. You might end up having to find a place off-campus and paying more than you’d like to for the summer but should be able to get into fall housing. I don’t think you can be an RA as the process was completed and RA’s picked in about March. I have usually gotten my loan money fairly quickly (within the first few weeks of the quarter). I am also doing this all off of financial aid and LOTS AND LOTS of huge loans. I understand the stress, I’m just hoping for a great payoff. Good luck, let me know if you have other questions.

I am a transfer student going into Westphal this fall. I see my scholarships and Pell grant in DrexelOne. How long does it normally take for what government loans I’m applicable for to show? Also how easy/hard is it to get a private loan to cover the rest with just decent to no credit history?
Thanks in advanced!

callmehaley - I can’t believe how prompt your responses have been. It’s really really nice of you to clear up these questions and ease some of our brains like you’ve been doing. So I was wondering now, could you ease mine?

I have two questions for you.

Is it better to apply with the VIP app or with the Common App? Because the VIP app did not mention a single thing about ECs. I’ve spent nearly every weekend/every day after school with my Speech & Debate team, have been ranked both locally and nationally, and have been Vice President, President, and President of Platform speaking throughout my four years. I would HATE for this to go unrecognized. I applied with the VIP app, but now I’m sort of regretting that decision. Is there anyway I can a) take it back and apply with the common app or b) send along an EC resume?

I wrote my essay for the VIP app about getting into computer science at Drexel. I edited it, checked it, re-checked it, and submitted it.
After I submitted it the app gave me the option of viewing the official PDF that adcoms will read, so I took a look.
It screwed up my essay completely. There was ZERO formatting, no breaks in between paragraphs - just a big, smush of an essay. It looks atrocious, and now I feel that it won’t convey my ideas as nicely as I had hoped. Is this the way that all essays look to adcoms?

Let me know when you get a chance!

hi! i’m a senior in high school who’s looking into graphic design @ drexel. i know you’re in music, but if you have any friends who are majoring in graphic design, could you give me a quick rundown on the program? how people like it, if it’s well-known, how the professors/facilities are, etc. also, do you know how the co-op for graphic design is? does drexel help gd students with it as much as they do with other students? and in general, how many months, combined, do students have of co-op?

thank you so much! i’m really frazzled right now, and threads like yours are so helpful!

I was thinking of applying to Drexel, now if I apply for the Physics program, do I have to submit any essay? I find the instructions rather vague.
