My daughter is researching IU freshman housing options. She attended Game Day this past Saturday where she spoke to a student who highly recommended Teter, academic floor.

So I have two main questions: what would be the best dorms given D's interests and how do you improve your chances of getting into a specific dorm (Teter) since you can only select neighborhoods, not specific dorms?

D is a Kelly direct admit and also plans to minor in Spanish. She would like a good balance of social life and studying, she does not want a single, and would stongly prefer not to have to bunk the beds. She would consider selecting an academic or honors floor, especially if that would help get Teter.

Also, which dorms have academic / honors floors? Any feedback on academic or honors floors? Thanks!

If you request Honors and Central Neighborhood the only honors floors in the Central Neighborhood are in Teter so if you get honors you are guaranteed Teter. Also bunk beds are optional in almost all the residence halls so you don’t have worry about that. Keep doing research on the KLLC it is a good program for people who are really interested in business. Also its fairly rare to get a single if you do not request one so you don’t have to worry about that.

I am not certain because of the construction in the last few years, but it used to be in Briscoe. I know for a fact that it is not in McNutt or Collins so it must be in either Foster or Briscoe.

My son chose a Teter honors floor over the Kelly LLC and is happy with his decision. There is always something going on, but he can also sleep when he chooses. I think one of the best reasons is that he now has friends that have all different kinds of interests. There are several freshman business majors on his floor, along with sophmore business majors who are a great resource. In addition to business majors though, there are kids with all different kinds of majors which makes it a very well rounded place to live.

My daughter is considering KLCC, but although she is a Kelley direct admit she doesn’t live and breathe business. She hopes to go into human resources and plans to major in Management, which seems like a pretty generic business major. Plus she heard you have to write 4 essays to apply for the KLCC. So now here is my next round of questions:
What is the application like for Kelley LCC and how competitive is it to get in?
Is there a separate application for Honors Residential Communities, or do you just need to be accepted into the Honors College?
What is the difference between Honors Residential Communities and Academic Communities, other than you have to be in the honors college to be in an HRC? They sound very similar from the descriptions online.
Is the Academic Community for the Central Neighborhood in Teter?

My daughter is a Freshman Direct Admit to Kelley also, and chose to live in Teter on the Honors floor. She loves it! She is quite glad she did not choose to go the route of the Kelley LLC because she also does not live and breathe business. She says now she recognizes that she is not the “traditional” business student and believes that she would not have been a good fit in the Kelley LLC. She has gotten very involved in the Teter governing board, and is her floor governor. The Kelley LLC is a great option, but I hope your daughter doesn’t feel like she “has” to live there just because she is a Direct Admit. There was no extra application to be on the Honors floor in Teter, just have to be accepted into Hutton Honors. My daughter plans to live there again next year.

To answer 3 and 4 the difference between an HRC and academic floor is that anyone can request an academic floor only Honors students can request an HRC floor. Sometimes this makes a difference others it does not. HRC is, in my opinion, better because the sense of community is established and has been for nearly a decade now, with academic floors this doesn’t happen often. Academic floor are in most Residents Halls so if you apply for academic you aren’t limiting yourself. Still I would overwhelmingly encourage HRC because the sense of community and investment in the floor is much higher than academic floor most the time. Nothing against academic floors this is only what I have observed.

mrlinkcc…you were correct. Called housing today and they told me the honors floor in Northwest will be Briscoe next year. Problem with that is that it is the most expensive housing.

Just wanted to say that it is not necessary to live and breath business to enjoy the Kelley LLC. My daughter loved the KLLC and she has many other interests and involvements at IU that do not involve business. Some of the networking opportunities that the Kelley LLC offered were invaluable.
