I didn't really have a good calculus background: only took up to pre calc in hs. I want to have a really good foundation in math because I plan on being pre med. My question is should I just take math 220 and try my best and hope for the best. Or should I start from the ground up with math 212 and how does this look to med schools/ is it even possible to take this level and even try for med school

Here’s a relevant URL: [Premed Coursework: University Academic Advising Center - Northwestern University](<a href=“Page Not Found: Health Professions Advising (HPA) - Northwestern University”>Required Courses: Health Professions Advising (HPA) - Northwestern University). UAAC says MATH 220 and 224 or 212, 213, and 214. They don’t make a distinction between the two sequences. I don’t know if med school admissions commitees might look differently at them.

Here’s another: [Courses: Math Department, WCAS, Northwestern University](http://www.math.northwestern.edu/courses/placement.html). It discusses calculus placement. The gist is that if you’re unsure of your background, you can request permission to take the 212 sequence, and since you’ve only taken through precal, you should be eligible. Again, I have no firsthand knowledge.

Good luck with whichever direction you take!

Yes good job dude

The difference is the pace. 212, 213, 214 would be at the normal pace that you’d get in many other schools. 220/224 would be covering the same materials in two quarters instead of three. Because NU students are not average kids and most have APs, 220/224 is the “new normal” while 212/213/214 would be too slow for many of them. NU doesn’t want people who took APs before to take 212 just to pad their GPA (by outperforming those who don’t have any prior exposure). But since you’ve only taken through precal, 212/213/214 wouldn’t be a bad idea.

I don’t think med schools care whether you are taking the regular or accelerated version. I doubt 212/213/214 would be frown upon because that’s just at the same pace as many other schools.
