Questions about Mount Holyoke?

Hi Everyone,

Congratulations to those admitted to the MHC Class of 2018!! I am a rising senior and work in the Office of Admission -- if you have any questions about Mount Holyoke, I would be happy to answer them or refer you to someone who can. Three years later, I am still so glad I chose Mount Holyoke, and I hope you do too!

Hi, thank you for doing this. My daughter is so excited to be accepted to MHC with a 21st Century Scholarship. Can you tell us about the scholarship? We looked at the web site and it was vague on what kind of support she would get with the scholarship? She is going to medical school after MHC.

Thanks a lot.

So glad someone is here to help with the questions. Can you take a few minutes to read mine, please ?
I have just been admitted. However, I cannot check my aid award, which makes me super anxious.
I haven’t received an email from the Financial Aid Office, and cannot log in to the FAO. The User ID and Password for my Admission Summary won’t work on that financial site.
My question is: Do you need an email from the FA Office before to know the aid? What are the steps to check your FA award ?

^^ I will chime in. Once you log in to isis, click on “Finance Aid Online”, then below the login username/password, click on “First Time User” and follow through, and you should be able to get your pin.

Thanksk txhandan, I’ve been able to log in.

Can anyone help me ? I only have 26k aid a year, which makes it impossible to attend Mount Holyoke. Is there a chance that I can increase this aid significantly ?

your student id is the id you used for isis. Same id for both places.

Make sure you’re adding both semesters’ aid together. That can sometimes be confusing on the award letter since they break down the grant into two semesters rather than an annual amount.

Hi txhandan. Congratulations to your daughterI If you PM me I can put you in touch with a few 21st Century Scholars who can offer first hand experience. The Office of Admission will definitely have more information, I would recommend contacting them on Monday for more details. There will also be a breakfast at Accepted Students Weekend for your daughter to attend where she can meet other scholars and receive information from the Director of the program. Congratulations again, what a fantastic opportunity!

@thinktry Congratulations on your acceptance! I agree with @staceyneil , make sure you are adding both semesters’ aid together. I encourage you to contact the Office of Admission who can connect you with Student Financial Services if you would like to discuss your package.

If anyone has any questions about student experience, I’m all ears!

How different are the criteria for Leadership scholarships vs 21st Century scholarships? I’m wondering about the generic requirements, if that’s a reasonable question.

I would like to know if it is possible to get some scholarship after the freshman year at Mount Holyoke.

@staceyneil and @MHC2015: Thank you for replying to my post. Can you help me with this, I’m so worried and frustrated about my future right now.
So, I did add up the 2 sub totals,
They are: $13k for Fall 2014/FA, $13k for Spring 2015/SP
And the budget for 2014-2015 academici year is: $57,046 (including books/personal)
Along with health insurance: $1800
Which means that for 2014-2015 I have to pay about $33k !!
I submitted my CSS profile, and I swear my family can only pay about $11k maximum.

My question to ask for your help is:Why am I admitted with such gap in my financial situation ? Or is there anything wrong with how my CSS Profile is?

Thanks in advance.

@thinktry

What is your federal FAFSA Estimated Family Contribution? Is that where you’re getting the $11,000 affordability? That’s the number in the small print at the very end of the FAFSA confirmation, it looks weird, not like a dollar amount: something like 0011455 which would be $11,455.

I know that MHC, like other schools, uses their own methodology to calculate their “institutional EFC” but I don’t think it should be tens of thousands different from your federal EFC.

Also remember that the EFC is almost never what you can really afford. We will have to borrow the majority of ours…

If you’re still confused, though, I would definitely encourage you to call the Financial Aid office today for clarification. Good luck :)

Hi @darwinknew, as I student I know very little about how the criteria for those scholarships and how those decisions are made. In general, both 21st Century Scholars and Leadership Scholars are exceptional candidates for admission! If you have specific questions feel free to contact the Office of Admission. @thinktry, I would recommend contacting the Office of Student Financial Services with your questions as they would be able to provide the greatest insight on your specific situation.

Hi everyone,

I had a user PM me about the possibility of doing a specific type of scientific research at MHC, and thought part of my response might be relevant to others.

Especially in the sciences, students have an exceptional amount of opportunities to do research at MHC. A huge advantage of being a small research liberal arts college is that students have access to research opportunities in the context of a small school, so you won’t be competing with hundreds of students or graduate students for spots in labs. If you’re very interested in getting involved in research, taking classes and forming relationships with professors whose research you’re interested in is the best way to get started. You can also speak with your advisor about your interest who will be able to help you find opportunities. If you want to do research as a first-year, it is definitely possible if you put in the effort!

@staceyneil: Thank you for giving me advice. I’m an international students, so I never used FAFSA to calculate anything. Should I have done that ?
I just fill in my College Board Profile and send to the College.
In the CSS Profile, my source (family incomes, savings,…) - daily cost = about 11k.
Can you give me some advice on what questions should I ask the College now, e.g about my CSS profile and such ?

@MHC2015 Is the new Trustee Scholarship (FULL tuition, merit-based) discussed on the Mount Holyoke website for incoming students this year (class of 2018) or for next year (class of 2019)? Thanks!

Hi! I’ve asked about this before on the admitted students Facebook page with varying responses.

I received a hand-adressed, hand-written letter from my regional admissions officer, congratulating me and hoping I’ll attend. Is this a common thing for admissions officers to send to admitted students? Or do they only send it to students that they really, really hope enroll?

I ask because the financial aid package they gave me (Leadership Scholarship + a bit more) isn’t nearly enough to allow me to attend MHC and I really would like to go. If they do only give the letters to people they really want to enroll, then I was hoping it would give me an advantage when I ask for more financial aid.

Thank you for your time!

Hi! I am an international student and have been admitted to MHC with financial aid, but the amount is very high for my family to afford? I am really excited about MHC and i want to be accept the offer of admission, what if i pay my $300 deposit but later due to financial constraints i am not able to attend MHC, will i be blacklisted?

@mary123456, my understanding is that it’s new for this year’s incoming class of first years (2018).

@sludge, I don’t think everyone receives a special letter, but I am not sure how many people do. Best of luck with your financial aid situation!

@ltj1996, I would recommend contacting your admissions counselor with this question!
