I go to a private college prep school in California. I am an incoming junior in the top 10% in my class and have a 4.0 GPA for both freshman and sophomore year. My school is very limited in the amount of honors/AP classes, but is recognized by colleges for being academically challenging. The humanities are my strong suits, ergo, the honors and AP classes I have taken and will take are mainly English and history courses.

I was wondering if in the near future, I did decide to apply to NYU, would a lack of AP/honors courses in the science and mathematic hurt my chance at admission? The only AP courses my school offers for science and math are AP Calculus, AP Bio, and Honors Chemistry (which adds an extra grade point), none of which I plan on taking, due to my lack of interest in the field.

I am planning to take APUSH and AP English as a junior and AP Lit, AP GOV, and AP Spanish as a senior, as far as APs go.

My intended areas of study are journalism, gender studies, and possibly women's history, therefore, I don't believe math or science will really be necessary.

Will a lack of AP/honors courses in the mathematics and sciences be a bad thing if I decided to apply in the future? I have taken science and math courses, just not AP or honors.

Thanks! :)

nopee… dont worry :). every school sends a school report with your application… this report tells how many aps school offers and etc… there is a lot of other stuff in this report as well including how the rest of your class does compared to you… and middle 50 standardized testing for your school… so because of this school report colleges will gain more insight into if you were able to do aps… because they were not offered the school will tell them that in the report and it will not affect ur chances…

Note that NYU does have some math and science core curriculum graduation requirements:

And AP scores can be used on some of them:

It sounds like your school has plenty of AP options. Selective schools will look at the rigor of your program, regardless of your planned major. They will look at what you took vs what is offered and won’t be concerned with AP’s that aren’t offered. Since your school does offer math and science AP’s and honors, your program is just not as rigorous if you aren’t taking them. Taking Apush and Ap Lit and spanish is good. AP govt is an elective and not as important as AP’s in math or science, but go ahead and take it if it is an area of interest. It doesn’t mean you won’t get in necessarily, but you will be seen as having a somewhat weaker program, I’m afraid.
