I want to write about my passion, which is Ultimate Frisbee.
I have played for more than 6 years, and now captain one of the best teams in the nation...top ten maybe eleventh. I spend a lot of time playing in summer and winter leagues, as well as with my team through practices and tournaments. But having this as a topic in my essay means that my essay wont have an academic topic.

I can write about science research or experiments i have conducted, becuase they are a passion as well, yet they don't nearly bring the same happiness or excitement when i stand on that field, with my teammates and we are preparing to start a match.

Should I write about an academic subject, because I am applying to college and one of the primary purposes is to show my academic interests, or can i write about an activity that i do that means the world to me?

This is for the common app...and other apps

I'm also curious of any opinions to this: recreation vs. academic. I want to write my essay through a more recreation-perspective (not necessarily written on my transcript, etc.), because adcoms can just read my academic credentials if need be.

That is a fine topic, one you are passionate about and have devoted time to. It is not necessary to write about an academic subject. Really you are just showing what makes you tick.

It is hard, though, to make "happiness or excitement when i stand on that field, with my teammates and we are preparing to start a match" sound unique. Be sure to provide specifics and details to make the essay come alive.

I think it sounds like a fantastic essay topic for you.I can feel your passion come through in the litlle bit you wrote in your post so I imagine in an essay your passion and excitemnt will be alive and come through which is exactly what is important to do. Who ever said it needs to be academic? It needs to be your voice, your life and show a part of you that won't be seen in your transcript.
