Rate the EC's Above You

10th  @HeisAidanD‌

Man I didn’t realize that the winky face would show lol

Ooh yeah you definitely have time @kitsyxoxo I joined alot of my ECs the fall of my junior year.

@HeisAidanD: 7/10. You’ve got leadership, which is great, but your ECs don’t really convey passion. From an admissions counselor’s point of view, it might look like you participated in these ECs solely for college admissions.

I’m currently a junior. Here are my ECs:

CHESS

 1. State chess champion.
 2. Captain of top state HS chess team.
 3. Employed by local chess center to teach at multiple elementary schools.
 4. Volunteered 500+ hours at local summer chess camps.
 5. Volunteered in chess program at local rescue mission.

MATH/CS

 1. AIME qualifier. Got a 7.
 2. PROMYS attendee (6-week, rigorous math camp).
 3. Created website about number theory (in progress).
 4. The Odin Project (12-week, rigorous CS program next summer).
 5. Created personal portfolio website (next summer).

OTHER

 1. Blogging (starting next year, about esoteric topics that interest me).
 2. Random Latin stuff (perfect paper on NLE, JCL conferences, top scorer on country-wide etymology exam).

3. There’s probably more.

Nota bene: I am home-schooled, so I haven’t had the opportunity to participate in “traditional” ECs like NHS, Key Club, or Math Club. Instead, I’ve just done things that interest me, and I call them “ECs” if they don’t fit on my transcript.

9.5/10 Your EC’s are very interesting to me!

PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy Club (Future President)
Student Made College Preparation and Discussion Club (President)

Med/Entrepreneurship

Entrepreneurship Club (VP)

OTHER
African American Culture Club (VP)

Volunteer Tutoring

@Apollo11‌ -

As I stated the Debate club isn’t too sophisticated, we went to one tournament and I went 2-2 my first time. I raise and allot the funds for the tournaments and club t-shirts.

Math Olympiad, I teach AMC solutions for the harder ones on the 10A. I also got us into a few district/state tournaments.

DECA, really not much. Freshmen are not allowed in competitions, so I’m on the learning curve currently.

JV Soccer is the real deal, I start on the team and we play in a district league. We finished 4th this season.

Newspaper - Wrote two articles.

I just don’t know what else to do.

** For anybody posting responses to this thread, it is highly advised that one not only provides a score to the previous poster, but some criticisms/feedback/information that can be used to better the poster’s ECs**

Also, @apandia‌, with the kind of EC that debate is, doing really well at a debate is more important than leadership roles in the club. As for Math Olympiad, it really sounds like the VP thing is just a title; your achievements in that club come from your actions as a mathlete, not a VP. As for DECA, it’s good to see that you are at least learning. JV Soccer is also nice, good luck with that.

However, as for the journalism stuff, you should really edit out identifying information. It wouldn’t take long for someone to find out who you are and then constantly harass you about it. Trust me, be smart and edit it out.

Lastly, the EC thing is something that I can help you with, i.e give you ideas, but that might take some time, since I really don’t have much free time due to AP testing right now. Could you PM me? That way I can respond with a lot of helpful things.

is not playing a sport or instrument a big disadvantage to the ivies?

I’d put that at a 7.5 or 8, @apandia‌. Maybe look to do things independently online, regarding newspaper/debate? I echo a lot of apollo’s points.

@Buggie111: 9/10. The Wikipedia edits and languages are really impressive. How old are you, though? I was under the impression that you had to be 18 to freelance on elance.com.

@Buggie111‌ Can you pm me a copy of ur NHD essay?

@Buggie111‌ - 9/10 - You’re clearly a born writer. I’m glad to see that you’re passionate for what you do. You also have a lot of depth, which is great!

Youth Court - Currently the Chief Judge. I’ve been doing this since I was a freshman and have racked up over 500 hours of community service with this organization. I also participate on the organization’s Executive Board, Board of Directors, and Ethics Board.

Speech and Debate - I’ve been doing this since my sophomore year and am currently the team’s treasurer. I was a semifinalist at the state tournament in LD debate my sophomore year and an octafinalist my junior year. I also was a semifinalist in Congressional Debate my junior year as well. I have attended/will be attending NCFL Nationals in LD debate in both my sophomore and junior years. I also was the 3rd person in my school’s history to break to outrounds at a major national tournament. I’m not attempting to brag, I’m just attempting to show that I’m really dedicated to the activity.

Partners Club - I’ve been working with this club since my freshman year and am currently a co-president. We basically work with the special education kids at my school to make them feel like an important part of the school community.

Mock Trial - I did this activity this year because our team needed another attorney and I agreed to do it so that they wouldn’t have to drop out of the competition. I actually learned a lot from it and plan to return next year! It was a lot of fun.

We the People: The Citizen and the Constitution Competition - I did this competition this year and WE WON STATE! I’m coming back next year to be an assistant coach for the team.

JV Tennis - I’ve been playing since my sophomore year. I mostly do this just for the purposes of fun and fitness. I have no realistic expectations of making varsity, but I’ve had fun playing tennis and I’ve found a sport I actually like, so that’s a plus.

NHS - It’s kind of a joke at my school, so…

@akacesfan‌ I see someone who wants to do law. 9/10 I suggest that you should try to get an internship in a law office.

Keep in mind that I want to do either business or engineering. I’m also a junior

*NHS and National Spanish Honors Society- Didn’t do much. Inducted into NHS this year. Got inducted into NSHS last year. Helped raise money to build a house in Nicaragua for NSHS.
*Tennis- 3 Year Player. I really love the sport. I’m doing Varsity next year and I was captain this year of the JV team.
*Soccer- Played Freshman and Sophomore year. I love it but I just don’t see myself playing it.
*Table Tennis- USATT Rated and won local competitions. I want to try to get to states’ after I finished junior year.
*Chess- 3 Year Varsity Starter. Most likely to be captain next year. Won Most Improved Player last year.
*Economics Club- Love stocks and risks so I joined. I plan on using this experience to deal with real stocks.
*High School Newspaper- I like writing about sports-related news so I decided to join the newspaper. I love it and I plan on continuing to be a journalist.
*Academic Team- Joined this year and I plan on becoming a better player next year. I have always loved trivia so Academic Team seemed like a perfect fit for me.
*Engineering Club- I’m the founder of this club. We are currently building generators out of magnets and our next project is creating bio diesel fuel out of vegetable oil. Best decision that I ever made was creating this club.
*School Band- I play percussion which consists of drums, xylophone, bells, triangle, etc. I played drums for 4 years and piano for 4 as well. I am Trinity-certified in piano.
*Economics For Leaders- doing this at UCal-Berkeley this summer.
*Sailing- I started this in 8th grade and it felt like paradise. I became a counselor and soon, made a website in order to teach kids how to sail.
*Robotics- Joined a robotics club. Swept the awards at regional and came 2nd at States’. Unfortunately, we missed Nationals by one spot.
*Fluent in 2 languages and can understand 4 languages.

I know that I’m missing some stuff but I don’t remember it at this time.

@DiscipulusBonus
Meh…I am under 18. But no one needs to know that. I deal solely in clients outside of the states, no W9’s neccesary. It’s funny you guys think this way, because the Barrett rep I talked to, and all the teachers, sow absolutely jackcrap in the edits.

@wcao9311‌ Sure thing. The topic was Debate and Diplomacy.

@Buggie111: I have no idea why people would find something like that meaningless. It shows (1) dedication, (2) knowledge, (3) competence, (4) cooperatively, (5) altruism, and so much more. The fact that you got three featured articles is even more impressive. Plus, it could make a great essay.

Also, you might just want to list “freelance writing” on your application since it’s technically illegal for minors to use elance.com.

D’oops.

@Hawkace‌ 8/10. Very good balance and leadership but I don’t see a common theme/passion. Good stuff, try to do some more engineering projects and focus on reaching a higher level of achievement in everything

I don’t feel comfortable posting mine out in the open bc privacy, but if someone pm’s me I can do them back!

I also went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic and went to the Duke Tip state ceremony thing when I was in 7th grade. I don’t really know if those are important lol

Thanks!

8/10, I like the focus on band but keep in mind that colleges generally dont care about stuff you did in middle school (not that im one to talk, as you will see if you keep reading
