OTHER
I’m not sure if this counts as an EC, but the summer before my sophomore year a friend and I created a website/forum that during school we probably worked on it 20ish hours a week each and during the summer work probably twice that each a week. Its focus is on current events and community involvement. It’s still pretty small, but has almost 250 members and over 10,000 posts in the forums. This is the one that I’m really passionate about but I’m not sure if I could put it on college apps, especially since it isn’t related to my intended major (I want to double major in physics and biochemistry and later go into an astrobiology related field)

I play drums and would like to somehow get involved in my school’s band 11-12th grade year.

VOLUNTEERING
Freshman year I volunteered 50+ hours as an assistant coach for a 5th-7th grade instructional county-league volleyball team.
-I went to three 2 hour practices a week to help teach techniques and make up different drills.
-At games I was responsible for doing all the stats on each player. Basically what I did was count up the number of each type of thing (to not get deep into volleyball terms lol) they did and I would compare and tell the head coach which position each player would be best at.
-I helped organize different group picnics/get togethers we would have outside of practice.

This summer and hopefully for the rest of my HS career I will be volunteering at my local humane society. I start the 2nd week in July and over summer will probably do 3 hours 3 days a week and probably do a full Saturday every now and again. I want to continue doing this during the academic year and will probably do 6 hours a week then not counting weekends.

Prospective Comp Sci/Software Engineering Major. Put the grades I did each of the activities in parentheses to the right of the description:

I put them in order from importance to least importance.

– Started up freelance SEO/Web Design business and made around XXXXX profit. (8, 9, 10, 11, 12)

– Nova Debate (team is 6th in the nation  ) – Webmaster of NovaDebate.com and a member of Executive Board (9, 10, 11, 12)

– Editor and co-webmaster of MyGamer.com (a video game website that was est. in 1996) [11, 12]

– Started up a group outside of school for Class of 2014 called Aced and it now has about 180 members; focuses on helping people with APs and standardized tests. In the process of building the website GoAced.com (11, 12)

– Junior Statesmen of America; 11th grade representative of my school’s chapter and soon to be “Chief Technology Specialist” of the overall organization’s website jsa.org (national organization with well over a few thousand members) [10, 11, 12]

– Kiwanis International (Key Club) – national community service organization [9, 10, 11, 12]

– Mentoring Tomorrow’s Leaders (tutoring freshmen with below average grades and basically being like an older brother for them) [11, 12]

– Boy Scouts [8, 9, 10, 11; quit this summer not doing in my senior year]

I’d say an 8.5/10 for yours Abby.

I’ll give you a 9/10, you clearly have a lot of leadership skills and I really like how your extracurriculars show how you’re passionate about helping others.

I’m a rising sophomore, so naturally these aren’t my final EC’s, just what I plan on them being by the end of senior year:

–Three years of participation in the Scripps National Spelling Bee: 2010, 2011, and 2012 as a sixth, seventh, and eighth grader. I tied for forty-ninth, forty-second, and twenty-first respectively.

–Four years of participation in UIL Spelling & Vocabulary–it’s a Texas-based competition. This year our team got second in regionals, and I got second in the state. Hopefully there will be many more victories to come over the next three years.

–Three years of participation in Academic Decathlon

–Three years of participation in High-Q (basically quiz bowl)

–Two years of participation in NHS and Key Club

–Four years of involvement with Lifeteen, my church’s youth group

–Various volunteer work, such as at the local rescue mission, regional spelling bee, and some other things as well. I’ll have a lot more volunteer stuff by the end of senior year because of CAS for IB.

8/10  You seem to have lots of involvement in competitions and such, if you begin to place it would really help, but considering that you’ve got three more years that’s plenty of time. Look for more opportunities like that.

Sing Carnatic music (type of Indian classical music) for the past 10 years and training to perform 3-hour concert debut by the end of senior year

 • Requires 2 hours of practice daily and is my main extracurricular activity

Volunteer at local hospital
Tutor throughout the school year at elementary school
Tutored kids with special needs for two weeks this summer
Volunteered at a preschool for two weeks this summer

Referee youth town soccer for the past year
Volunteer at my temple where I’ve attended cultural classes for the past 10+ years

National German Exam, Gold Level

I’m a rising sophomore, so this coming school year I’m applying to NHS as well (which I should get in to) and adding ‘Best Buddies,’ which is a club that allows me to interact weekly with my peers who have special needs.

I know I don’t have that many extracurricular activities or seem to have a particular focus, but I’d like my academic focus to become tutoring/science and cultural activities like my temple and singing, as well as the North South Foundation competitions. :P

10/10 you show alot of dedication and passion in all of your ECs.

Morning Announcements Personality: 10-12
(Our school does televised morning announcements that are mostly student-run. I’m one of the people actually on the TV)
Project: Johnstown 9-12
(After school program focused on the history and nature of the Johnstown area. Run by the National Park Service since 10th grade with the opportunity for placement into the Youth Conservation Corps/Pathways to Green Careers summer employment program. I was in that this past summer.)

I may run for a senior class representative, especially since I ran for class president and lost.
I also attend a HUGE number of leadership conferences, with my favorite being the HOBY conference I attended in the summer of 2012. I think we’re going on one to the US Army War College to study the Battle of Gettysburg this year…
I’ve also done National History Day projects in 9th-11th grades, winning the Senior Historical Paper category at my regional contest in 10th grade but couldn’t go to states because of conflicts. I also couldn’t attend the regional contest in 11th grade, but my paper won the school contest.

Wow. I do a lot. But it really doesn’t seem like it…

@Swiftyfan13x I thought the same thing about myself and it was a huge confidence issue thing for me, but my posting on here and this summer honestly changed that a lot. I think it’s all about the way that you present yourself. And it’s quality, not quantity! :)

Plus, my private college counselor told me that 4-7 dedicated EC’s are all that you need, and honestly, adding more could hurt you.

Who bumped my thread? There’s a new necro-er?

^I’m not going to rate in this post, just provide objective feedback since I no longer agree with the really strange awarding of points in this thread.

How good at debating are you? Have you done high level debates? If so, where, and what rankings did you get? It’s important to be really good at debate rather than just be an officer in this case.

What do you do as Vice President of Math Olympiad? Do you just sit around as the VP, or do you have an active role as some sort of administrator?

DECA usually features an aspect of team roles; what is your role on your DECA team? Is it significant?

Is JV soccer you passing the ball around with friends in a gym after school or is it your team against other teams in a competitive league?

Newspaper - What kind of articles and how many articles have you written? What is your role as a team member of the newspaper?
