Raw score in math was 52 (-1 MC, -1 grid) and I got 740?!?!??!

What the EFF? I got two questions wrong in the math SAT and scored a 740? How is that possible?!?! I've never seen that before. My raw score was 52/54.

Anyone seen this before? Can this be a mistake??

haha sorry to hear that, I was a little shocked with my score as well. I omitted one and got four wrong and I ended up with a 690.

But based on what I seen, the math section is very easy for those who well studied hard or have a strong background in general mathematics.
For example, all native-Korean students basically learn SAT level math in their elementary and early middle school years and it’s practically drilled into them with all the after school programs they take emphasizing academic skills to get ahead of the competition for the top three universities here.

Now most of those who take the SATs in Korea, to go an American university, (many in specialized public “foreign” schools which require rigorous testing to get into) are pretty much elite of the elite in math/science.

That’s my experience from my time in Korea but I’m sure this can be applied to China/Japan(esp)/and other Asian countries as well. But let’s just say I saw a lot of Chinese and Koreans at my test center, like people who traveled overseas to take this test.

So the curve is almost non-existent which means you can’t even afford to get one wrong. I might be completely wrong here so anyone care to add or refute anything?

But I’ve taken so many practice papers (from the prep books provided) where I’ve gotten 1 or 2 wrong and still scored around 760-790. And those tests weren’t harder - in fact, I’d say that this SAT (I took the international one) had a slightly harder math section than the practice test I took the night before, for which I got 1 wrong and scored a 790.

One person in the SAT international thread said that apparently 9000 chinese people would be taking the SAT this year. I think it’s fair to assume that the vast majority of these students were quite proficient at math, and could have killed the curve…

It’s not normally this harsh a curve. I was hoping for at least a 760 :(

Hmm I never knew there was a separate international and domestic?US/Canada? version. I wonder if they have one for every time zone… o.O

But yeah I feel for ya man. It sucks to pay $30 for a prep book (stupid currency rate), $45 to test, and a whole a lot of time to not get the score you were hoping for.

Take it in October if you have time and some how… you’re not satisfied with a 740… But than again… this is CC so yeah, take it again in Oct :D

EDIT: Whoops, nvm about the previous post, just realized that the curve is predetermined >.<

Yeah, I plan to retake two more times in Senior year (which is gonna be really cramped up, but because our school puts virtually no emphasis on SATs and US colleges, none of us US applicants are organized and have to take all of our tests right before admissions).

I’m applying for RD, by the way.

I was really hoping that because of superscoring I would be able to score 770 in math and then I wouldn’t have to worry about it as much for my retakes, but now there’s extra pressure to score higher.

If you look at this:

http://www.erikthered.com/tutor/SAT-Released-Test-Curves.pdf

It shows you the raw-scaled score conversion chart for SATs over the last few years. NEVER has 52 corresponded to a score below 750. So frustrating that 2 silly mistakes can cause so much damage to my score. Anyway, gotta be optimistic about the future, and stop worrying about the past.

Thats weird dude, I got -2 MC, and 1 omit and I got a 740.

EDIT: Oh wait, I’m assuming you’re international so you have a different test

@sci-fry: the chart contains only QAS tests plus two tests from 2005 that are available as practice tests. Each year the tests in Nov, Dec, Mar, and June are not released and so the curves remain unknown, unless people post their scores, say, on CC. Even then, for math, you don’t know how many grid-ins vs. MC you had incorrect, so the raw score can’t always be determined once you get three or more wrong. (You need to get the “SAS” from the collegeboard to figure out exactly which questions you got wrong.)

Using CC for data, both Mar '08 and Nov '08 had -2 = 740, so this has definitely happened before, and recently too. I’d really like to add these non-QAS tests to the chart, but I would need lots of hard-to-get data.

I got -2 760.

I felt like this June’s test was easier than the practice ones I’d done, but maybe that’s not true of the international one. If it was that could explain the harsh curve, but that still sucks. [I mean, it’s a great score and all that, but still, I would’ve guessed like a 770 or something for -2]

I got two wrong and got a 760

I am an international and got -1 and 2 omitted and ended up with a 730!!! how is that even possiblee !!!

holy cow man.
I got -1 and ended up with a 780 (-_- totally bummed about it tho)
…are you sure u didnt get THREE wrong??

fignewton, thanks for clearing things up. I found out about the two questions I got wrong after I got out, one which I misread and the other was a silly-ish mistake - I discovered them on CC, so I’m pretty sure those were the two mistakes, but who knows… Regardless, the raw score remains the same.

I didn’t find the international SAT math section particularly easy, but I’ve just got to move on…

yup I am sure… I can’t believe how harsh this curve is :S actually one problem is that I am pretty sure that I didn’t leave any question blank but on the website it says I got 2 omitted questions… I think I am gonna verify my scores…

That’s a really harsh curve. I got -2 (one of which was a super easy question that I read wrong ugh), and got a 760.

is this the June SAT? I took the May SAT, and I got -1 (left blank) got a 800.

Everyone here keeps saying that they got -2 and got a 760. I got -1 and omitted 1. Shouldn’t I have a 770? (I got a 760.)

My brother got 2 wrong 4 years ago (June 05) and got a 740 too.

The international version of the SAT is often different from the US version (and so it has a different curve), which is why some people here are reporting two different scaled scores for a raw score of 52. AFAIK, in QAS months the international and US tests are the same.

oh ok my 800 (with 1 blank) for May SAT was international…
