ONE QUESTION- DOES ANYONE KNOW AT WHAT TIME THE E-MAILS FOR INTERNATIONAL APPLICANTS WILL BE SENT OUT ON THE 23rd?

Glad if anyone can help!

since FedEx never delays mail 1 week I'm waiting an email starting
"Dear Gjergji, I'm sorry..."

It's a pity, I really loved Caltech :(

i am with albanian eagle on this one.. it doesn't seem to make sense that fed ex wouldn't mail an envelope within 6 days (assuming it was mailed on march 16).. it looks like a rejection for me.. i'll just wait for the email to confirm it, but i've basically accepted the fact that i was rejected...

"It turns out that Joe has been plenty mean to phuriku on another thread."

I actually take issue with that comment, Ben, and would like to protest it.

Please don't compare me to "ihatestanford"--I certainly NEVER expressed any sort of desire that he not be accepted. In fact I'm not sure I ever directly commented on his fitness or not for acceptance, and I am sorry that he won't get to experience Caltech since he seemed to want it really badly (though I guess not badly enough to retake the SAT).

I just suggested that his antipathy towards standardized tests might have more to do with personal factors than quasi-moral objections. I think that is a legitimate comment which is supported by at least circumstantial evidence.

I will link to the thread and let people decide for themselves:

Oh, by the way on the "hating math" thing. I was also an Aero major at Caltech and I too hate proofs with a fiery passion. This is probably because I never learned to do them properly in high school (which helps a lot for Math 1a). I memorized the proofs you have to reproduce on the exam, finished Math 1a with something like a 62% and never looked back. The rest of my Caltech career was just fine and I'm "re-upping" there to start the Aero PhD this fall.

Oh, and I agree that Caltech Aero is tops (or else I wouldn't be going back). It's very small but very good--they have had a number of profs retire and hired some younger folks to replace them since 2004, so I can't say what impact that will have, but it's extremely strong. There was a time when GALCIT absolutely dominated academia for aerospace and fluid mechanics, which is now past, but that is due more to other programs rising (often with Caltech grads as faculty) rather than Caltech falling.

Okay, Joe, you're right -- sorry. I do think you were a little harsh, but you certainly didn't go so far as to rejoice over his misfortune.

Don't let me interrupt the conflict, but I just wanted to respond to Mathwiz and say that I still haven't received a decision yet (I am domestic in Washington DC).

And on top of that, Math 1a is done on a pass/fail basis, so I'm guessing that a lot of people just get by Math 1a having only developed mediocre skills at proofs. Besides, proofs are best learned over a period of time. The reasoning required for proofs is so different from that required for Collegeboard/AMC math, such that it's difficult to predict who would do well at proofs, and who wouldn't do so well.

And then, who gets into the Freshman Mathematics course?
http://www.math.caltech.edu/classes/ma_9/index1.html

Do they eventually have to go through proofs like Math 1a or what?
[/quote]

Yes, I think it's possible to get by with a mediocre understanding of proofs, unfortunately. I didn't learn as much as I would have liked, but I think that's basically my fault with being lazy and not the core's fault for having it p/f.

The freshman math course you referred to is Math 1a, section 1 (sometimes called math 0.9)...over the summer, admitted students are sent a Math placement exam. You can get placed into section 1 from there, in which case you also have to take Ma 1d second term (a lesser-united course about sequences and series). From my understanding, 0.9 is basically 1a, but without series stuff.

Also, based on your placement exam results, you might also get placed in Ma 8, which meets in 3 1-hour sessions a week to supplement Ma 1a (not section 1) with extra practice. Not sure how the advanced placement tests work to test out of Ma 1, because they definitely didn't apply for me :P I think anyone who wanted to could take it, though.

By the way everyone, at some point in the near future, you'll receive something in the mail (or email, for internationals). Don't fret and spend all that time and energy thinking, "It's been X days, Fedex said this, so therefore they must have rejected me." :)

For what it's worth for internationals still waiting, my FedEx was sent March 14 (according to Caltech's date) or March 15 (according to the FedEx sticker printout) and made it to me in England on 19 March.

Oh, and if you get put in the "extra help" Ma1a section, you should definitely do it. I somehow didn't get placed in it even though I'm pretty sure I needed it, and I'll bet it would've helped me a lot.

um
i guess the rejection emails come out today....

i wonder when the emails will get sent out.. i'm guessing they'll do it in the morning since most international people will be in the afternoon/evening when the work day starts...

Alrighty...so I am really bored and have decided to post my decision. =P

REJECTED (I was deferred EA)

I actually got the letter on 19 March, 2007. It was dated 15 March, 2007.

I may post statistics later...

Anyways, I hope the best for everyone else!

are internationals still hoping for the FedEx package?

Mathson got rejected yesterday. Full statistics in the EA thread, but they were fine. 800V, 760M,690W, three 800s on the SAT2s. 102.5 weighted GPA, top 1% of a large class. Freelance computer programming experience. I really thought he'd at least get waitlisted.

I'm still hoping (somewhat -- fine, very irrationally) for a FedEx package, but it's pretty unlikely that I'll get one at this point. Waitlisting is the best I can hope for (and, well, I suppose it's theoretically possible to get in off of the waitlist, so I shall keep my limited optimism going to that extent).

Mathmom
So sorry. Mathson sounds like a terrific young man. I don't understand these things sometimes.

any emails yet?

no.. not yet.. they will probably email at around 5pm PST (just a guess).

I finally got my decision today and I was Deferred-->Rejected.
