Re-taking classes?

My friend got a really bad grade in CHE 131 this semester. He had some family problems and he couldn't concentrate/study as well as he could have. I read somewhere that some schools let you re-take classes, and they post the new grade on your transcript (while completely erasing the old grade off your transcript). Then again, I also read that some schools just post both grades. Would he be able to re-take it even though he only got a C? And would they post both grades on the transcript or just the new one? Thanks!

The old grade will not be erased, and will stay on the transcript. If you re-take it, the new grade will just show up along with the previous one. You can retake it - just get the form filled out. Check on the registrar’s website or go to it. However, if your friend had serious family problems, he should have withdrawn if he knew he was doing bad or filled out a late withdrawal appeal form if it was after the withdraw deadline. One of my friends had the same issue and was granted a late withdrawal after her appeal got approved.

Yeah, I agree. He told me that he thought that a “W” would look worse on his transcript, though. He’s doing pre-med, so obviously his transcript is gonna be a major part of his application. What should he do now?

A W is much, much better than a C in a critical course such as this, anyday, so I honestly don’t know what your friend was thinking. W’s are only a problem if you go insane with them, but a few are absolutely fine. I would suggest he retake it; it’s probably too late to file an appeal anyway.
